Service, setting and ambience was impeccable. Food was extremely average. But had a lovely time and it was affordable

Quite quiet when we arrive, greeted with a smile. Slow service, our poppadoms arrived before our drinks did and mains came out an hourish after we ordered. Food was really good we would eat here again if the service was a bit quicker. Staff could walk around a bit more to check on tables as we had finished our first drinks before the mains arrived but no one came to check so one of us went up to ask to order another round of drinks to be told to sit down and they will come take our drink order which they did immediately. Spent about 2 1/2 hours here.

A very mediocre restaurant with a pleasant owner and service.

Myself and my wife were visiting the area and decided to visit the Sultan and we both enjoyed a tremendous meal. Service was excellent the decor and atmosphere was good. I went for the Naga chicken and the wife had a prawn korma. Would definitely eat here again.

We booked a table for 8pm. Restaurant was fairly empty. Our poppadoms were served quite quickly, but the mains took a while to arrive. Food was ok. Not spectacular. I was disappointed that when we ordered some water, we were served 4 x individual glass bottles of mineral water. My friend noticed (after we had opened them unfortunately), that every other table had carafes of tap water. I asked the waiter why we had not been given this option. He was quite argumentative, but eventually, because he could see i was not happy, took my bottle and glass and said he would refund mine. Terrible way to resolve this dispute. Would not visit again

My first time coming. I took my ex boyfriend for his birthday meal and he recommended this place. It didn’t disappoint!

Disappointing is how I'd describe the meal we had at the Sultan. The venue is great but it's not that popular so there's no real atmosphere. Service was ok but nothing special. So to the food: poppadoms were ok but felt like they'd been cooked earlier. The accompaniments were awful. An orange gloopy sweet one, a red gloopy spicy one, an uninspiring yoghurt one, and some raw onions. Years ago any Indian restaurant would serve you mango chutney and lime pickle - this was way below that level. Main course lamb biriani was ok, spice level just right, except it came with a vivid red 'sauce' that had been made in a factory somewhere not in the kitchen. Again the memory banks are telling me that a biriani comes with a vegetable curry. Nope, not here it doesn't. This place needs someone to care about how poor it has become, and fix it, and fast!

We had an early pre-concert dinner here, so the restaurant was understandably quiet. It's a nice building, the food was tasty and the service efficient and friendly. I do think, however, it would be a good idea for them to make it clear that they don't serve any alcohol at all.

First time at The Sultan for many years. Excellent food and plenty of it. Very welcoming staff.

We visited for my husbands 50th birthday and had a really lovely meal. The staff were great and they really looked after us. The naan were so yummy and complimented our curry.

Great food, good setting. The service was brilliant, couldn't do enough for you. Would recommend to anyone and will definitely go there again next time I'm in Lancaster.

A beautiful setting, responsive and very friendly staff, and the best tasting Indian food I’ve had for a long time. Our party of 4 all tasted each other’s dishes and the food was all exceptionally flavourful without being drowned by too much heat/spice. We had the best evening out and paid a very reasonable price for it too. Very highly recommended - “Sultans” are definitely one of the food highlights of Lancaster.

Great food., great service.

We booked as a group of six friends for a Saturday evening meal. We arrived at 7:15 and were greeted by a very friendly young man. There were not many diners in the restaurant and we were served very quickly. The food was good and was tasty. The only downside was it was very cold in the restaurant and I had to leave my coat on for the whole time which didn’t give me a pleasant dining experience.

We were the last customers of the evening so it's difficult to say much about the atmosphere, however, we were very relaxed and didn't feel uncomfortable being the only ones in. We chatted with the staff. We loved the food and the service was great. It was busy earlier in the evening but we were at a concert at The Town Hall. We were very glad they were still open. Thank you.

My wife and I visited for the first time recently - it won’t be the last. Staff were friendly and attentive. The restaurant, warm and clean. Food arrived quickly and was delicious. We had a great night. Many thanks.

I don't usually write reviews but I feel compelled to, in the hope that the owner reads it and makes some improvements. I visited as this restaurant has previously had a good reputation. We pre-booked but that wasn't necessary as the restaurant was deadly quiet. It was cold inside and definitely in need of some TLC. The toilets were very cold and there was no hot water which was concerning. I decided not to use the toilet as it was unclean and so cold. Our food arrived way too quickly for it to have been freshly made. The sauce on both our curries was gelatinous and unappetising. There didn't appear to be any vegetables in the sauce as suggested on the menu. The food was served on cold dishes and plates which didn't help as the room was so cold too. The only acceptable and possible fresh item was the naan bread. Please take note Sultan of Lancaster and make improvements. Retaining customers is key in a competitive and difficult climate. I work in the food industry so know the challenges.
