If king of the sea Lord Triton had given us permission to cook cod in batter he would have ordered it done the way as it is done at the Magpie Cafe in Whitby. To say this is a pantheon of fish and chips it is an understatement. It has been a few years since I have been to Whitby but oh my god it was so worth the wait, this cafe or probably a restaurant sits in its armchair overlooking the harbour and the many wannabe fisheries that laden the streets of this beautiful seaside town. Yet the Magpie stands as high as Whitby Abbey with everything around it looking up in awe. The food excels, the batter light crispy, the fish does not fall of the fork but stays there clinging on tantalising the taste buds with eagerly awaiting joy. The chips light crispy on the outside fluffy on the inside and mushy peas so delightful it all added up to a trilogy of completeness, the chip butty at the end was just the icing on the cake. For £34 a meal for two inc a drink may seem expensive for fish and chips but let me tell you this place is a goldmine. We booked our table in advance but there was a queue of 12 people willing to wait over an hour to get in. And it was busy but the food was not rushed or corners cut but served by friendly staff who are on top of their game. Perfection.

A wonderfully welcoming pub for families. We met friends here for Sunday lunch with our two little ones in tow. The staff were fantastic - they’d already put a high chair at the table, they brought plastic cutlery for the kids and had a separate kids’ menu ready for us. All things that make life so much easier for parents eating out. Felt awful about the food our kids dropped on the floor but again the staff were lovely, insisting we shouldn’t worry about cleaning it up. Food was great, the atmosphere was nice and we felt able to take our time even though they were busy. Just a great experience all round. Everything you could want from a country pub.

We were made to feel welcome right from the start. On making our choice of food from the menu (a very good menu) we were asked if we had brought an appetite and were informed that the best way to enjoy was to take it nice and slow as if on holiday. We were very pleased with our choice the MEZE every item was first class and as informed was plentiful so much so that by the final course we had to ask for a doggy bag. Everything from start to finish was first rate we will definitely be returning.

We went yesterday & have been a few times since lockdown ended . Really enjoyed the meal. Service from Sam and John excellent, shin of beef pie fab with loads of gravy . Great value the food & good to see the menu evolving . We live in the village and its lovely to see the place working . It’s not Michelin star , but that’s not want you want . Well cooked , well presented, lovely food with happy service on a local level .

Every time we go to Whitby (which is at least twice a year ) we eat there every other night good menu but fish and chips are so good we always have them , When we get back home we never have fish and chips they can’t cook them locally . Would highly recommend the Magpie.
