14th July - Bastille Day and the place was buzzing, had the Bastille day Menu which included a glass of Kir, the price with wine , water, 3 courses and coffee ..£58 for 2 people , fabulous value but more importantly much better food and service than I have had in many restaurants in France. Highly recommended ....need to book!!!

I have visited this restaurant on a few occasions and always had a fantastic meal. We called in again recently and were very disappointed the menu had changed from 'fine dining' to more of a snack type menu "to cater for the student population". I had had a burger previously so I thought I'd stick with what I knew but how disappointing! they seem to be using cheaper ingredients. Unfortunately I will not be going to this restaurant again.

Had a recent meal with a group of friends. First rate cooking, appalling service. Had excellent experiences here in the past so surprised when we couldn't get any drinks served to us in the seating area near the bar. Even more surprised when we had to remind the staff that we had been waiting over half an hour past our booked time in a half empty restaurant to get seated. Great food but just couldn't get the waitresses' attention for more wine. Staff seemed to be more interested in putting out breakfast servings at end of meal that serving us coffee. First restaurant in years where we didn't leave a tip. If they can get the service sorted out then would continue to highly recommend.

hi everyone , if you are thinking of going to this non authentic indian cusine please please please think again. our meal was well over priced and well over cooked, i asked for a chicken madras which they don't make! along with all famous other indian currys . the manager recommended a curry and stated very clear it was similar to madras . i trusted his judgement and was more than disappointed , as it was basically a korma (coconut milk based) with some chilli added, this is a huge difference as a madras is tomatoe based . to my horror i hate korma or anything to do with coconut . the saga loo is awful they over do it with too much spinage you cant even taste the potato and add cheese to it. my partner ordered the crispy lamb which was no better than our local Chinese take away accept it cost 14.50 our rice could have feed 4 people and they let us order two. our starters and main meal cost 91.53 . we did not eat hardly anything , and when asked why we didnt eat it i explained to the manager i dont like coconut this is why i asked for a madras he said sorry and still give us the 91.53 bill. to be honest i dont care about the money we have wasted , im more upset with the management and non authentic indian food. i absolutely love indian food more than i like shoes or handbags and was really looking forward to dining there regular as we live close by . also there website is currently not working properly so can not see the whole menu , ( you would think a restaurant with this price tag would have this sorted) definitely don't take your children (or child) like we did. i feel this should be clearly stated on the menu or website as they do not cater for children at all . the manger recommended fish fingers which cost 7.50 , these were fish with a curry paste deep fried in breadcrumbs. also the garlic naan is not fresh garlic and is too over powering . i dont feel they can justify the money they charge be prepared for a weird non indian chinese experience .

If you want to waste your money on a Liverpool posh night out then crack on, if not just get on a train to London for proper meal and night out. In general I was not very impressed at all. Food was poor, staff were down right rude. More club/pub than somewhere for a meal. Also beware the thuggy doormen.

The place out side and seating area was lovely then once i was seated and asked for my order i could see through to the cooking area it was filthy dirty the food was horrible and the price for two was a hundred and twenty pound we both could not even place the food in our mouths it is a wonder health an safety have not closed it.

We booked a table for four for Father's day by email a week previously. Their website states that they do not reply to confirm the bookings so we rang on the Friday before the reservation date. They confirmed everything was in order. We got there on the day with our two elderly guests and were told that they had no record of the booking. Their view was that we must have booked with their other "restaurant" whom we must also have rung to confirm. We didn't. We checked the phone number on our list of calls dialled on the mobile phone and rang it. They answered as "the Monro" and the number coincided with that on their website for the Monro (not the James Monro). We had contacted the correct premises. When we asked why they don't reply to emails to confirm bookings they told us that they were "too busy". They offered, however, to send us in a taxi to their other restaurant, the James Monro Speakeasy as it is billed! which we declined. Simply put, they ruined father's day for a pensioner, tried to make us appear stupid in the process (it could only have been our fault) and really didn't give a damn. We will never reserve a table with them again.

Went with our 2 kids aged 7 and 9. Staff very accommodating. Great food, great service. We especially enjoyed the desserts (so often a let down at restaurants).

Etsu The current food trends do not favour Japanese food. At the moment people are supposedly looking for seasonal, local, sustainable and above all cheap food and it doesn’t tick those boxes. The conveyor belt restaurant thing never worked for me. You are never sure of what half the dishes are or how long they have been out and while the individual plates seem cheap when added together it is a pricey meal. There are better ways to eat Japanese food, like Etsu. Etsu is near to Albert dock but on a side street. It is easy to miss, even though it is has a little Japanese garden and there are smells of ginger and soy wafting out. Inside there are about a dozen tables so it is a good idea to book. The decor is not over the top oriental kitsch but the room does suffer from having very little natural light. In order to confuse customers the toilets are unisex, so you really feel that you have wondered into the wrong section. The menu has starters, mains courses and desserts , which is unusual as Japanese food normally consists of lots of little dishes brought to the table together. My dining partner loves sushi and I have never seen him happier than stuffing his face in the sushi bars of San Francisco. We didn’t order starters and he charged into the sushi list ordering prawn California rolls and three types of Nigiri sushi; pickled mackerel, barbecued eel and raw scallops. He also went for a mixed sashimi (raw fish) selection. I ordered a chicken katsu which is chicken in tempura batter and served with sticky rice and salad. I don’t often order chicken in restaurants because it is impossible to tell what kind of life it led. I have no idea what they did to this chicken but by God it was tender. It was as far removed from a frozen, battered chicken piece as a roast rib of beef is from a fast food burger and I loved it. The sauce drizzled over it tasted of barbeque sauce and was too sweet. My partner was served the most exotic California rolls I have ever seen. Usually they are a bit of avocado, cucumber and either prawns or roe, surrounded by pickled rice and wrapped in seaweed. Here the seaweed was in between the rice and prawns and rolled in sesame seeds. This sort of inside out sushi is uramki-zushi, according to a book I consulted . My partner didn’t say if he preferred this style but he ate it with a blissful look. I tried a bit of tuna sashimi, it was fresh but cut too thinly, I like the density of oily fish. The serving of scallop was very pretty but tiny . Overall he was delighted. Despite having eaten enough to feed a regiment he still wanted a pudding. I declined; desserts are not traditional in Japan so they are never the chef’s strong point. The dessert special was a sort of coffee flavoured sponge roll . He said “It was bloody delicious” The staff were efficient and polite. I thought the waitress was very helpful, telling us what each dish was, however my partner thought she was just a little patronizing. She told us, with pride, that all the fish was flown in from the Indian and Pacific Oceans daily. If you want to cut down on food miles avoid this place. According to some grim estimates tuna will be extinct within 20 years but as rice and seaweed are plentiful vegetarian sushi has a future. The greatest dsiappointment of this restaurant was the wine list. There is an extensive list of bottled beers but like all bottled beers they are pricey. There are about 4 whites and 4 reds, all of which were brand names available in supermarkets for £10 or less. As a restaurant they should have something more imaginative. They do have a range of saki both by the bottle and in little flasks. My partner had a 125 ml of the house saki and thought it served too warm but otherwise liked it served warm and very much liked it. The bill was £53.80 for two with one bottle of house white at £9.95 for a meal this good, in pleasant surroundings with good staff it excellent value. Japanese food is never and it was my choice to go with a bottomless pit.

Fantastic food, fast simple service. Great value for money if you control what you spend, all the plates are different colours to make it easier to tell how much you spend!! Lots of variety, my brother came with me who really doesn't like sushi but there was loads of hot food offers for him and he went back the after!!! The restaurant is the best I've seen in Liverpool 1 really colourful and clean with these bright orange lights. Definitely one of my favorite places (especially as I just found out everything is only £2.20 on Mondays)
