The multi-award-winning restaurant Ramsons has been a fixture in Ramsbottom since 1985. It's one of the north of England's most acclaimed destination restaurants and is 'Reader's Restaurant of the Year' in the 2009 Good Food Guide. Ramsons covers two floors and has recently undergone an impressive Milanese-inspired refurbishment with the main restaurant at ground level and the Hideaway bar below. But it's not just the decor that is Italian-influenced; the food and wine draw heavily on the proprietor's Italian sourcing connections. Ramsons has been using organic produce since 1987, long before its current popularity. Vegetarians are well catered for with their own gourmet tasting menu. The wine list is exclusively Italian and meticulously put together through years of vineyard trips and research. All the wines are also available to purchase. 131 Bury and Rochdale Old Road, Birtle, Bury, BL9 6UE - 0871 9606132

The award of a Michelin Bib Gourmand in January 2007 was the latest accolade for The Waggon At Birtle on Bury and Rochdale Old Road. Chef proprietor David Watson came from a Michelin-starred background (ex-Pool Court in Leeds) and returned to his roots to open the Waggon with wife Lorraine in 2002. Housed in a former pub, the premises were completely refurbished to create a smart 50-cover bistro with a 25-cover function room above. The food is Modern British with a slight French influence but relies heavily on fresh local produce; hence dishes like the Tempura of Chadwick's Bury black pudding with Lancashire cheese, apple and bacon and mustard vinaigrette. The main a la carte menu (7 starters, 7 mains, 7 desserts) changes every three months whilst the good-value Market Menu is updated every fortnight. They also offer a lunch time light bites menu in addition to daily specials from the a la carte. The wine list has a good choice of 50 bins with 12 by the glass plus a featured guest wine. It is open Wednesday to Friday 6pm-9.30pm, Thursday & Friday 12-2pm, Saturday 6pm-10pm and Sunday 12-8pm. Awards | Michelin Bib Gourmand | Good Food Guide 3
