I recently dined at The Social in Urbis. I made a reservation for my party of 3 and was pleased to be greeted by a fully laid, large round table in the heart of the café bar. To start, the male diner enjoyed a chunky piece of brown toast moistened with wild garlic butter, crowned with a royal family of king prawns and a lemon quarter. He moved onto a steak and kidney pudding with buttered spring cabbage, generously coated in gravy. The mash potato looked like it had been piped out of an icing bag but overall the presentation was enticing. My salmon fishcake with Mediterranean looking homemade tomato relish and soft poached hen’s egg was cooked to perfection; the egg yolk oozing out over the crispy coating that encased the soft potato and thick flakes of salmon. The final dish to arrive was the confit chicken nesting on sage and onion mash, surrounded by red wine sauce. The two females opted to finish with sticky toffee pudding; a satisfyingly warm, layered mass of soft sponge interspersed with butterscotch sauce and topped with a glob of vanilla ice cream which contained a surprising but welcome crunch of white chocolate pieces

Lovely food, fantastic service - nothing too much trouble - and reasonable prices. Can't understand why the place isn't crowded out at lunch-times. Would love it to be open till 10pm Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, though because would use it even more with my social groups. Great find.

The Converservatory Cafe at Urbis is a real find- fabulous food all home made with imagination and care. Great at lunchtime and also a good place to meet for afternoon tea - cakes and scones are to die for.
