I have been a customer of Maxi's for many years and I was devastated when they closed at the beginning of the lockdown ! Our meal last week (family celebration) was excellent. As usual we ordered too much food but we always like to take some home to relive the experience again Always my favourite restaurant -the best Chinese food for miles with such good service too.

A lovely family meal with our children 11 and 12. We had the banquet. We all loved it. Great food. Good Service. Tables well spaced and felt Covid safe. During October 2020 the banquet is reduced to celebrate their 21st birthday. Fantastic value. Great time to go. Booked table online through website.

Truly enjoyable evening. Food was really wonderful, service attentive, polite and kind. Very Covid friendly. We have already recommended to friends.

This was our third visit to 31 Castlegate in the past three years - we incorporate it into our annual pilgrimage to York. Service and food were both excellent as always- the venison and lamb were both delicious. Just a pity more people do not appreciate what a little gem this is as it was quite quiet when we visited on a Sunday evening.

Wife and I both had pork stotties that came with chips, stuffing, Yorkshire pudding and a little jug of gravy. Loads of meat, vey porky, all of it was very nice. Very filling for a lunch time visit and exceptional value for money.

Really lovely meal! And efficient, friendly service too. Only small criticism being that I was asked about a face covering which as an exempt person made me uncomfortable (the legislation makes clear that signage is enough) but the staff member was friendly and kind. If Covid security is a concern for you you’ll have no worries here. The restaurant is immaculate and tables are well spaced out.

Great food, although fairly pricey. Temp taken on arrival for safety of all. Unfortunately it Lacked atmosphere as it was very quiet. Only 1 table of 4 were dining when we left at 8.30pm. Shame really but expected in these strange times. Would recommend as a special treat due to price. Staff very pleasant and attentive.

Visiting York for the first time and had read the reviews on 31 Castlegate so booked dinner there. Happy to say we were not disappointed. The service was excellent and the food delicious. The homemade bread was so tasty we asked for more. We have enjoyed York and plan a return visit when we will definitely book at this restaurant again.

Fab friendly service and lovely food!

Sunday carvery was very good. Good choices of items for all courses. Coronavirus arrangements worked well and our carvery was served at our table. Good sized portions and the lamb was very tasty. Friendly staff. Would visit again.

Came here for date night with my girlfriend and the food did not disappoint. Had the meatball starter which was incredible. The sauce it came with was so nice and tasty. Chicken Kiev calzone was beautiful as well. The service was really good & fast. The only negative regarding the night was the lack of covid restrictions. Staff did have masks on but that was about it. tables were really close together and there was no track and trace which i think needs looked at. Other than that brilliant restaurant and would highly recommend!

My wife and I had dinner on Sunday evening and found it a wonderful experience. The food was superb; I particularly recommend the venison. Ambiance comfortable as well as elegant and service impeccable. Will certainly return next time we are in York.

Very attentive and friendly service, good Consideration given to Covid precautions, Delicious food. Thoroughly enjoyed the oriental pork starter and venison dish, just disappointed I couldn’t manage a dessert as was so full. Would definitely recommend and definitely return. Have also had the takeaway from here and that was also equally delicious.
