Zizzi Restaurant

Now I am not a fan of pizza houses but Zizzi's in Exeter is more than that. Against all my better judgment I am also not a huge fan of national chains unless they have a very good product you can always rely on. Zizzis has all of this I feel. I eat at Zizzi's regularly and its main outstanding features are its ambience: warming, cosy and intimate even with such a large space. The trademark oven with chefs cooking infront of you is always a comfort and distraction if your food is taking a while (which it never has). The staff are very friendly and do give a genuine impression of caring for their customers. As a red wine drinker, the wine list humbling, even their house red. Their food is made very well and the portions are generous. I normally eat the Capriciossa pizza with rocket side salad and the large house Merlot. Again, it is pizza and pasta but done in a way that doesn't scream turnstile. I would recommend it to anyone and look forward to my next time there.

Mill On The Exe The

Mill on the Exe is a curious restaurant with a great location. The unique feature is the attached mill which is always a pleasure to watch in the summer time with a sprawling beer garden. However, food is not served all day. Parking is adequate. The food is possibly slightly overpriced for what it is but arguably you are paying for the ambience.

Mill On The Exe The – Exeter
Cafe Rouge

Another chain in Exeter which brings with it the expectation of the same menu, service, and ambience to be expected from a nationwide establishment. I have enjoyed late lunches at Cafe Rouge, especially their salads. The wine list is above adequate. Their best feature would have to be their staff which are very friendly and approachable. Only possibly negative is that as a non-smoker, I am never sat far away enough from the smokers and I think the restaurant could benefit from being non-smoking or expanding upstairs.

Bella Italia – Exeter
Boston Tea Party

Boston Tea Party is one of my favourites for the summer time and makes fresh tasting food with an adventurous, satisfying menu. The staff are always very friendly and it oozes personality and individuality: something missing from most coffee-style houses. It is has a very personal touch. My favourite is their avocado wrap and their fresh juices. You can take away wraps and sandwiches which makes for a fulfilling lunch which is worth the extra walk from the supermarkets in the high street. Boston Tea Party is nothing short of trendy.

Coombe Cellars Inn

I found the only thing that lets this pub/restaurant down is the unfriendlyness of the staff.

Ask Restaurants Ltd

It is what I expected of an ASK which goes many ways. The consistency of quality is upheld, however, I did not find the portions filling and I was left looking around for staff frequently without much attention. It is placed in an idealic setting by the cathedral and I believe is one of the nicer places to eat during the summer time. For a 'pizza' house, I find that the menu is unadventurous and not competitive with many other similar restaurants in Exeter. Many pizza style eateries are close-by and nothing about ASK screams at me to pick on them except for the possible safety in a known chain. Booking for larger parties at lunch in advisable end of week and possibly mandatory for evening dining. However, small numbers mid-week is safe.

ASK – Exeter
Harrys Restaurant

Harry's is a welcomed addition to Exeter's culinary tapestry. The portions are filling, the ambience is a trendy, rustic bistro like feel that other places have tried and failed at achieving. The location off the high street keeps it special. I have never had a bad night at Harry's and the menu is pleasantly surprising. The house wine is good (red and white), however, curiously priced as some bottles should probably not be priced as highly as they are and others should be lower for what they are. Easily, one of the most reliable and enjoyable places to eat in Exeter.

Zizzi Restaurant

We were a bit worried by the fact there was an advert for chefs in the window, but hey how can you get a pizza wrong. The waiting staff were brilliant and made it easy for us to spend more. The Pizzas we had were as good as it gets, crispy, thin bases with generous high quality toppings. The wine I had could have been better but after all most chains buy cheap. Our only moan was having to deal with a surly, bored and rude manager when we paid.

Piermasters

Restaurants in Plymouth enjoy a constant supply of fresh seafood, and this is the best restaurant in Plymouth in which to sample it! The fish and seafood dishes are expertly prepared (never overcooked), fresh, beautifully presented and taste absolutely wonderful. The meat and poultry dishes are also fantastic, and I enjoyed a lovely duck confit there a few weeks ago. The literal cherry on top for me is the deserts-the lemon tart, with its delicious base, sweet crunchy top and rich lemon cream beneath is pure nirvana. If you want to arrange a private function then you should consider this restaurant-the ground floor is a little dated, but upstairs the decor is modern, with a cute 60's retro feel. What more can I say? The waiters are always polite and friendly, and the service is swift, even when you turn up in your scruffiest jeans and cookie monster T-Shirt! Hurrah!

Quay 33 – Plymouth
Cafe Rouge

I just wrote a review, but I forgot to say HAVE THE PAUPIETTE DE POULET-yum!!

Cafe Rouge – Plymouth
Cafe Rouge

I love Cafe Rouge-the food is delicious, the portions are not so big that you cannot fit in dessert and a boozy coffee without sacrificing your starter (a tragedy!), and the atmosphere is relaxed and informal. There are a nice variety of wines to choose from, and I have never ordered a bottle I have not thoroughly enjoyed. The Cafe Rouge in Exeter has a better ambience as the decor is a little nicer, and there are lots of secluded tables if you want a little privacy. However, the service in Plymouth is far superior-the food is served faster without compromising on quality, and the staff are really polite and helpful (especially the waiter with the red hair!). Once, when our first course was a little bit slow in coming we were given some yummy bread sticks covered in garlic butter to keep us going! My favourite dishes on the menu are crab cakes (starter)and cassolet (main course).

Galley The

First rate evening out. Hosts are amiable and food is inventive and original. It is not a cheap place to eat, but it is good value and the whole experience is worth every penny. Staff are knowledgeable and interested. You won't be disappointed.

Galley Fish Restaurant With Rooms – Topsham
Starz Bar & Restaurant

the one thing that struck me most about starz is how friendly the waiting staff are. they always have a smile on their faces and do go out of the way to make you feel special, and nothing is ti much trouble for them. thge floor manger even came over personally and spoke to us. plkus the food is fantastic, cocktails to die for and you always have a party there. thanks guys. a welcome additon to exeter

Starz Bar and Restaurant – Exeter
Elizabethan Inn

Although not exactly on the beaten track, this is well worth the effort to find.. a good choice for both carnivores and veggies too! very amenable to your dietary needs. you have to go there!!

Elizabethan Inn – Newton Abbot
Starz Bar & Restaurant

Starz Bar and Restaurant – Exeter
La Petite Maison

I have dined at La Petite Maison on numerious occassions and found the standard of food and service to be quite exceptional. It is always some where that I introduce friends to and they usually request to be takenthere again. High compliments I think!!

La Petite Maison – Topsham
Double Locks

The Double Locks has been a great place to eat in relaxed outdoor or bustling indoor setting for years but of late the food has gone from being interesting, moderately priced and well cooked to being hurriedly prepared and poor value for money but we were there on a Bank Holiday! I hear from others that the standard varies with the cook on duty so you may be lucky! Still a great ambience and location with a great choice of well kept beers.
