The Hour Glass Inn – ExeterSunday lunch for 3 people celebrating my husbands birthday. It’s a mixed review sadly. Lovely venue - cosy and welcoming. The starters were really very good ( black pudding scotch egg with soft yolk, monkfish scampi and the smoked haddock chowder). We then had a really really long wait for our main course… the waitress did apologise and gave us one free pint. We all ordered the roast beef - the beef was rare and delicious, generous portion lovely mixed of veg (swede puree, cabbage and cauliflower cheese, one carrot etc) and a large yorky. But, the potatoes were pretty much inedible and impossible to cut. I suspect they had once been lovely crisp roasties but they were now like leather. My son left all of his and my husband and I ate one each. Really very disappointing, and let the whole meal down. The waitress came to ask if everything was OK with our main course, and we told her all was delicious apart from the potatoes that were really poor quality… unfortunately, she just laughed ( I expect out of nerves/ not knowing what to say) and I assumed she would have told someone senior. But, appears not as the next thing was someone else asking about puddings, we declined as by now it was 4.30pm. When payment for the bill was taken the waitress asked how was the food… once again came some polite but honest feedback - she was more apologetic. So a mixed picture - slow with food, awful roast potatoes and lacking some customer service imho. Hoping this was just a one off, as it is a magical spot for a winters lunch by the fire.

The Hour Glass Inn – ExeterHad a lovely roast at The Hour Glass Inn yesterday. I had the chicken and my friend had the beef — both were absolutely delicious, perfectly cooked, and very generous portions. The gravy was delicious and really brought everything together. The staff were amazing: friendly, attentive, and made us feel very welcome. A great atmosphere and a real gem in Exeter. Would highly recommend and will definitely be back.

The Hour Glass Inn – ExeterAs away, a friendly atmosphere, delicious food and wonderful drinks, along with warm welcoming service.
The Hour Glass Inn – ExeterThe Hour Glass Inn is our favourite pub in Exeter, but last Friday was the first time we'd actually eaten there. The food was superb, from the starters (Brixham Monkfish 'scampi', curry emulsion, lime & coriander + Somerset Prosciutto crudo, walnut pesto, burrata & croutons) to the mains (Pan Roast Sea Bream, crab bisque, watercress & smoked mash + Beer braised ox cheek, mash, sough dough crumb & greens) to the pudding (a shared affogato as we were stuffed, but feeling piggy). We were served by Giles, who was very efficient, friendly and knowledgeable and is a huge asset to the pub. The atmosphere was busy with several Christmas work parties, but we ate in the upstairs side room which was cosy. Much of the food and drink was local (both of my glasses of white wine were from Devon; Sharpham Dart Valley Reserve & Sharpham Bacchis Stop Ferment 2024). Highly recommend - if you're on a budget, it's definitely worth saving up for!
