Had a meal last night, have eaten here many times never been disappointed before, however I ordered the halloumi portobello mushroom burger WITH mayonnaise. I felt what was served to me was mayonnaise with mushroom and halloumi - complete overkill with mayonnaise, so much so the mushroom and tomato shot out of the bun as soon as i tried to eat it, this was after i had scraped off as much mayonnaise as i could. The waitress came and asked was everything OK with our meal. I told her while the food was good, I couldn't actually enjoy my burger as it was completely smothered in a thick layer of mayonnaise. She apologised saying she would pass my comments onto the chef, I then heard her tell who I presume was the bar manager, no apology or mention from him my concerns when we paid the bill. If was my birthday I cant say i enjoyed my meal that much,. Also we were put on table 9 which felt like we were sitting in a cupboard at the side of the stairs, so not really feeling any atmosphere. Never had a problem before but last night wasn't really a pleasant meal, which is a shame as previously I've never had a problem here.

We have been many times and enjoyed it but yesterday it was really disappointing, food was really poor and service too.

As a frequent visitor to the area we often eat out and booked the Wheatsheaf for Sunday lunch I have just read previous reviews and saw that someone commented that they had a table in a corner next to the stairs, we had the same table. It was tucked away, dark and cramped also it was very cold! The food is always good, reasonably priced and has decent portions. The service is also good with efficient polite staff. I have marked the atmosphere down purely because of the table

Love this place. They catered for an important family event following the loss of my father and, even though he had never been, the ambiance of the place makes him feel close. The building is fabulous, love the history. The food and service are second to none. My husband and I had a great meal - indeed we have never had a poor meal here and the service is top notch. Love it.

First time I’d visited The Wheatsheaf and thoroughly enjoyed the Cobb Salad, I’d chosen. The other three people in the party all enjoyed their food too. Staff very friendly and polite. Good service, didn’t feel rushed allowing us to have a good catch up. Will return !

We really enjoyed our meal and appreciated the perfect portion sizes which allowed us to eat it all up! Friendly service and welcoming atmosphere added to our stay. We look forward to a return trip.

Food was lovely and plenty of it. The service was a tad slow but when staff did come to table they were very pleasant. The atmosphere was good although they would benefit from a mobile card machine, as the bar area was quite full and would have liked abit more room and privacy whilst using my card. It was lovely to sit by the open fire and our three year old grandaughter also loved it too. Always a friendly welcome .

Used the Wheatsheaf for a post funeral meal for 50. Helpful staff before and during the buffet. Coped well with various dietary requirements. Good sized room with ample seating and circulating space.

Had an excellent time at the Wheatsheaf last Saturday evening (21st.) with our Son and his Partner. We all loved the friendly relaxed atmosphere in this attractive 17th. century inn. The service was welcoming, friendly and cheerful. There was plenty of choice with a specials list and my wife, who is a vegetarian was well catered for. There is a good range of drinks, my Son enjoyed the draught Belgian beer and I enjoyed one of the local real ales on offer which was very well kept. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the food (the fish was outstanding) and we look forward to returning. We live locally and have visited the Wheatsheaf several times and know that it always maintains its high standards of food, service and welcome.

We visited the Wheatsheaf on 24 December. We used the on line booking system to book a table for 5. This was very straight forward and we received a reminder of our time the day before. The menu was seasonal and the food was excellent. The staff were attentive and helpful. Only downside - our table was very near to the front entrance and every time the door opened you could feel an icy draft which at times was uncomfortable especially if a few people came in together. Next time we will request a table in the back room where the fire is.
