Established in 1992, Southport’s Alamir Bistro offers quality Lebanese and Middle Eastern cuisine and is still the only authentic Lebanese restaurant in the region. It’s a cosy and intimate 26-cover restaurant with a suitably Middle Eastern vibe and a friendly atmosphere. Chef-patron George has been at the helm since the outset and his food has plenty of vegetarian options as well as mazza banquets to suit groups of all sizes – the bigger the group, the less per head you pay. There is also an early bird menu as well as the main a la carte and a small wine list which needless to say includes the Lebanese classic, Chateau Musar. The Alamir opens evenings Wednesday through Sunday.

After working in France and Belgium, Marc Vérité realised a lifelong ambition and opened his eponymous Bistrot Vérité in Birkdale Village. It is very much a family affair with wife Michaela running front-of-house and dad Claude helping out with patisserie. It’s deliberately modelled on a rustic French bistro with simple and laid-back styling and a daily-changing blackboard menu based firmly upon fresh local produce. Starters might include Mussels Mariniere or Baked camembert with caramelised apples and pistachio nuts; typical mains include classic dishes such as Chateaubriand for two with Bearnaise sauce and Grilled venison haunch steak rubbed with juniper berries and garlic. The Bold Hotel in Southport is situated right on Lord Street, famously the inspiration for Paris’s wide boulevards. It’s conveniently located close to the Floral Hall, Southport Promenade and the Arts Centre. Behind the imposing exterior is a hotel, bar and a restaurant which serves traditional British cuisine and there is a choice between the bar menu and various restaurant menu. The Bold Hotel also has a very popular al fresco dining area that seats up to 100 people and offers great views along Bold Street. The hotel has 23 bedrooms, all ensuite, some of which have been recently refurbished. There is also a large function room which is ideal for weddings and large parties.

Housed in an elegant Victorian building on Lord Street, Southport’s Casa Italia has been a feature of the local dining scene since 1978. It’s a relaxed and informal venue with its own unique décor and style and is family owned and run. The authentic Italian menu is wide-ranging with a good range of seafood options as well as fresh pasta dishes and locally sourced meats and seasonal vegetables. Everything is cooked to order from an open kitchen, enhancing the already lively atmosphere. Good-value shoppers and early bird menus are available in addition to the main a la carte. Casa Italia is open every day from noon to 10.30pm.

Centrally positioned next to The Scarisbrick Hotel in Southport, Cinnamon Bar & Lounge is a sophisticated and stylish contemporary bar and restaurant. The interior is designed to a very high specification with a brown and cream colourway, leather chesterfield sofas, dark wood tables, elegant lighting and ornate mirrors. By day they offer a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere to enjoy a respite from shopping with teas and coffees, a light bites menu or a more substantial lunch. A great choice for a business meeting or lunch, the menus feature homemade modern European dishes, created with locally sourced produce and as everything is made fresh to order they can cater for any dietary needs you may have. Enjoy the likes of Lancashire black pudding with a runny poached egg, or grilled sardines as a starter or light lunch, follow with their signature fish pie or Cumberland sausage and mash. In the evening the mood changes and the bar becomes a cool place for after-work cocktails, a good wine list that offers all by the glass and a menu that features rump steak with homemade chunky chips and lamb shank. Sundays see a traditional two- or three-course roast. Open Monday-Thursday 11-9pm, Friday and Saturday 11-2am and Sunday 12-9pm.

The Dolphin Restaurant has been a fixture of the Southport dining scene since 1982 and is a multi-award-winning venue with a full 5 star rating for food hygiene on Scores on the Doors. Other accolades include the Top Seafood award, runner-up in the Family Business of the Year 2006 and Dolphin was voted one of the top 10 friendliest fish & chip restaurants in the UK. The current proprietor is the third generation of a family that has owned fish and chip restaurants in the north of England since 1957. There is a central takeaway section and the restaurant is large and spacious catering for up to 125 diners inside with another 30 in the outside area where dogs are most welcome. It’s quite unique as it isn’t just fish & chips – they do dishes like lamb with new potatoes, pies and sandwiches. The Dolphin is open from 11am-6pm seven days a week and many customers use it for afternoon tea. It is not licensed and senior citizens get a special cut-price menu. Coach parties of up to 110 are catered for.

'Fifty One' is housed in a beautiful Victorian building on the promenade, opposite Southport's Theatre and Floral Hall. The high ceilings and original wooden floors make for an atmospheric venue where you can savour the food in this Italian fish restaurant. Every day, fish, shellfish, fruit and vegetables are sourced from Liverpool's speciality markets with meat exclusively supplied by Broughs the butcher. All the bread, pasta and desserts are freshly prepared in-house. The wine selection at Fifty One is predominantly organic and Italian, with the philosophy to offer fine wine at an affordable price. Fifty One is also available for hire for all kinds of event and special occasion.

Tucked away on Southport's Queen Anne Street, the Forge Brasserie has built a reputation as one of the best steak and seafood restaurants in the northwest. The stylish interior extends over two floors with an open-plan kitchen where you can watch the chefs in action. Smart, efficient service and some good-value special deals. Gusto is a contemporary Italian with a corner location on Southport’s Lord Street and large windows that help create a relaxed dining experience. Good for a light lunch or casual evening meal with plenty of salads, appetisers, pasta and pizza, as well as special dishes which change daily. Gusto is open every day except Monday right through from 12 noon until 10pm and now has free wifi internet access.

Southport’s brand-new four star Ramada Plaza Hotel has a fantastic location, close to busy Lord Street but enjoying splendid views out over the Irish Sea. Facilities include 133 bedrooms, a fitness suite, meeting and function rooms and the bright and airy Marine Brasserie which has its own sun terrace. The menu offers plenty of choice ranging from light snacks – served from 11am until 10pm – to dishes firmly based on quality local produce including sweet-cured lamb from H Greaves & Son, Fleetwood smoked mackerel, Goosnargh duck pressing, Reg Johnson’s smoked pork belly and a choice of grill steaks, burgers and beer-battered cod with homemade chips. The brasserie welcomes both hotel guests and non-residents and prices are very reasonable.

Located on the main road from Ormskirk to Southport, Master McGraths is an immensly popular destination restaurant and bar famously named after the Irish racing Greyhound who won The Waterloo Cup three times in the 1800's. Run by Master Chef of Great Britain Jim Sines and wife Trudy, both passionate about hospitality, the cooking of Jim and his team is the draw here. The menus offer something for everyone whether popping in for a light lunch, romantic meal for two or a lengthy family meal. With weekly changing 'Market Specials' and everything possible made in house from scratch, the main menu showcases the finest local and seasonal ingredients; fresh fish from Fleetwood and locally reared Aberdeen Angus, this is definatley a foodie outpost. Positioned centrally in Southport's main shopping area next door to M&S and close to the train station, Pippins is a quality, modern-day café and restaurant. The perfect place to have a break from shopping or a family lunch, the restaurant is air conditioned and can seat up to 140 diners. Everything is homemade and cooked fresh daily; the menus are governed by what is available that day from the butcher and fishmonger. Drop in for coffee and tea and homemade cakes and sweets, grab a sandwich on the hoof or spend your lunch hour enjoying one of the dishes of the day. Expect a daily changing list of specials such as fish of the day which could be poached, pan-fried or grilled, a warming vegetarian dish of the day or comforting classics like homemade steak and ale pie, slow cooked lamb with tomatoes and thyme or chicken curry. There is a separate children’s menu with healthier options, smaller portions of the mains or if pushed the odd nugget and fish finger can be produced. Any and all dietary needs are met: check out the gluten-free dish of the day. Pippins is family run and they are passionate about good service and making sure their customers leave happy. Salvatore’s of Southport is a warm and friendly neighbourhood restaurant that serves both traditional Italian and British menus. Run by Salvatore himself the restaurant has a loyal following for its great value food. The restaurant is spread over two floors with a cocktail bar upstairs that doubles as a function room. The main restaurant is atmospheric and split into two dining areas with modern décor and there is a small al fresco area at the front. A Table d’Hote menu offers English and Italian staples such as grilled meats, fish & chips, pastas and risottos. The A la Carte menu offers a broader choice of starters and mains from across Europe with plenty of steaks, racks of lamb and a strong fish choice as well as pastas and speciality stone baked pizzas. Taj Mahal on Southport’s Bath Street is conveniently located right in the centre of town and is open from 5.30pm til midnight or later, seven days a week. The menu ranges right across the subcontinent, so in addition to the usual tandoori dishes from the north you can sample the southern Indian banquet (with a meat or vegetarian thali), balti specialities, the fiery Zalzala, one of the house specialities and fish specials like the Jal Biran, served with either cod or monkfish. The chef here has 20 years experience and your food is served in pleasant and contemporary surroundings from a kitchen with a 5 star environmental health award from the local council. Taj Mahal offers free delivery on takeaway orders within three miles or if you collect your food you get a free onion bhaji. The Passage To India in Ormskirk is a sister restaurant.

Southport’s former Warehouse Brasserie has unveiled a cool new look -- the restaurant, now known as The Warehouse Kitchen & Bar, is co-owned by Paul Adams and Steven Gerrard. The uber-cool Kitchen & Bar features a white cloth restaurant on the ground floor and ultra-chic bar with cool tunes on the first. The Warehouse has been a fantastic success for the last fourteen years and in that time received many accolades – listed in all major food guides including the Michelin Guide, the AA Good Food Guide & Hardens, along with being voted as one of the 50 best restaurants in the country by the Independent and receiving two AA Rosettes and a Michelin Bib Gourmand. The bespoke design-led restaurant boasts an extensive a la carte menu along with a wine list to complement. During the day you can enjoy food from the a la carte or a great value set lunch menu and a similar set menu is available to early diners. The a la carte offers starters such as smoked haddock fettuccini with tarragon and bacon crisp or Southport chowder with brown shrimps, razor clams and mussels. Mains include steaks, lobster and crayfish salad and the Warehouse burger. The menu also features a choice from the East with starters of chilli salt squid and Vietnamese noodle soup with flaked chicken chilli and coriander and mains of Indonesian monkfish curry and chocolate, chilli-glazed pork belly with mango, papaya and pineapple salad. Trattoria O’ Sole Mio is a family run, authentic Italian restaurant that offers much more than pizzas and pastas. Family run by Boris and Olimpia for the last 8 years, O’ Sole Mio or ‘My Sunshine’ has become a local favourite for celebrations and romantic dinners alike. The friendly, spacious and atmospheric restaurant can accommodate up to 120 diners and is very popular for larger parties and private functions. The restaurant is close to the beach, seafront and the theatre so it is very busy in the summer months, when its always a good idea to book. Here you can expect truly authentic Italian dishes made with locally sourced meat, fish and vegetables and cooked to order. Starters on the A la Carte offer the likes of deep fried whitebait, grilled sardines in garlic or sautéed chicken livers with wine and chilli, a small pizza menu covering the classics. Mains offer a range of homemade pasta and risotto, a good choice of grilled or pan fried fresh fish and seafood and there is plenty for the carnivore including daily specials. All the desserts are homemade and change regularly. The Table d’Hote menu comes in at a set price for 3 courses and is available all week till closing and on Fridays and Saturdays until 7.30pm.
