This place is best bet in the area. A fantastic old coaching inn. Its upmarket and our room was surprisingly hip! The Tufton blends the old and the new really well. We ate in the dining room and were impressed. Finally the area is one of my favourites in Cumbria. Away from the hustle and bustle of the national park, a slice of real Cumbria with a great dolop of history.

We never visit the Lakes without visiting this restaurant. The food is superb and Chris, Busara and their staff are polite and attentive. Be sure to book at busy times, the premises are quite small and we see people turned away every time we are there.

I RECENTLY ATE HERE AND I AM STILL PAYING FOR IT! AVOID AT ALL COSTS (PRAWNS!).

Thoroughly enjoyed a meal at Casa Romana this week - they were good enough to squeeze us in on a Saturday night. The steak with pepper sauce was sublime (good homemade chips too), and the mussels were fresh and very, very tasty! Massive portions (a main course with a coffee was more than sufficient), excellent value and great service from the owner and his staff. Definitely recommended and we'll be back!

The best Spanish food i have ever had, could not find anywhere half as good in Barcelona!! The atmosphere is just like being in Spain. The huge portions are excellent value for money. I would recommend the chilli chicken (battered chicken with a very tasty sweet chilli source and served with a small salad) and the potatas brava are very good aswell, the menu is mainly tapas so you get to try all kinds of wonderful foods esp when you go with a large group. I live in Penrith and this is my favourite place to eat. The chef /owner is Spanish and the service is v good.

Stayed in Millom this past weekend (24th - 27th April '09) and after being let down by our Hotel (they weren't cooking Friday evening) we were recommended Beswicks. What a joy the place is. The restaurant welcomes you the minute you put foot through the door and the service and food were excellent. You're made to feel very special and David is an enigma - how does he find the time to sleep? If you've been there and had the privilege of conversing with David, you will know what I mean. Would recommend it to anyone and everyone, Go - you will not be disappointed.

Didnt like it here, felt like me and my family were in the way and the food was not that clever The staff were very rude and racist

Pricey, poor service, but great food. If you can put up with the prices and lack of service - ie. if you ain't in a hurry, the food is very nice.

We were visiting our daughter in Staveley and wanted to take her out for dinner. She booked the Wheatsheaf. I can honestly say that the food was superb, the service excellent, and the overall experience of eating there was an absolute delight. Without going into the full details of what we ate, the venison was the best I've had in years, the fish dishes were fresh and cooked to perfection, starters and puddings mouth watering just to look at, let alone the taste! Wine was perfectly chilled and delicious. As for the service, the people at the 'sharp end' were pleasant, attentive and showed professionalism beyond their years. I would like my daughter to marry one of your chefs - if he's free -as the cooking I could put up with every night! Anyway, one of the best dining experiences I've had in years!

Had a lovely lunch of soup and a crayfish sandwich at the Brown Horse in the sun. The place is in the winster valley one of my favourite parts of the lake district!

What a great little find. Great service, wonderful food and a lovely atmosphere. Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to escape from Center Parks for a few hours.

This traditional inn places a high value on serving good quality no nonsense food with ingredients sourced locally. It has recently won the CAMRA award for real ale for Cumbria. It usually serves at least 4 different real ales mainly sourced from Cumbria and the North East. Highly recommended with very friendly service.

Superb meal with my family. The place was packed (Saturday evening) but we'd booked so no problems. Everyone enjoyed their meal. The Fillet steak was excellent and well priced compared to some places I could mention. Lovely bowl of roasted veg and potatoes to go with it all washed down with nice wine. Any pizza or pasta £3.90 for children..superb stuff. No hesitation in recommending this place to all. It was so nice we went back the following night. A proper Italian restaurant to savour!!

I travelled from Essex to Newcastle on business and stopped at this hotel for some lunch with a colleague. We found it easy to stop there as road works were hectic during the time in Penrith, and we were very happy they were there as we found this place wonderful. we normally meet elsewhere but we have now diverted to stopping here as the food was lovely, staff very friendly and overall excellent. we are now regular eaters here and recommend it to anyone wanting good quality pub food.

New to the area and keen to try out local pubs, we have eaten here twice and have been most impressed. The food is locally sourced, freshly cooked - not reheated like the chains - and very well presented. They offer English Lakes ice-cream as part of their extensive dessert menu. Staff are always friendly and happy to chat. Prices are very reasonable for food of this quality. It always seem to be busy with diners in the evening so they must be impressing other people too!

We had our first meal at The White House on Saturday 4th April. The meal was, without exagerration, one of the best I have eaten in a restaurant for some time - the chef clearly knows what he is doing and every course was superb, from the complimentary canapes and homemade bread that we were offered the moment we sat down, to the homemade pistachio ice-cream to round the meal off! Service was impeccable and very genuine. Decor was minimalistic and modern. There are good restaurants a many in Bowness, but The White House has got to be worth a try if you've not been before - we will be going back!
