We found this restaurant on Sugarvine.Com before our visiting this area for our family holiday this year. As a consequence we (5 / 6 people) ate at The Old Custom House for dinner and a lunch. We found the food imaginative (e.g. cinnamon parfait) and exceptionally well prepared (e.g. a crab bisque that was both light and intense) and the service was attentive and friendly without being over the top. Our visit for lunch offered them a real challenge (I won’t tell you how as I’m sure they’d never want anyone to do this again!) but the staff went well beyond the call of duty in their kindness and consideration. Their approach to lunch is good fun too. They serve a number of dishes, all priced at £4 and you can order as many or as few as you like. Each was beautifully presented and delicious. We devoured ours! For the quality of the food, the prices are fantastic. Dinner for six, not counting wine was £150 and lunch for five was £70. This was outstanding value. The downstairs of the restaurant is a lovely place to sit, eat, drink and watch the goings on by the river. On both occasions we ate here we all came away with the impression that the front of house and the kitchen were trying very hard to impress, and they certainly succeeded with us. Fabulous little restaurant we found on the last day of our trip. Great food, great service and such good value for money. Don't usually do recommendations but felt I had to give 5* here.

Thanks for a great meal on Thursday night, we have eaten all over the world lately and this was in the top two, if the race comes to Plymouth again we will be in. Good work chefs, amazing food.

i often stay in mortehoe and eat in the rockleigh whenever i can. the food is always fresh and the menu changes regularly. as a veggie, there are always new interesting meals and whilst it isn't easy, room must be saved for the fantastic puds. great staff, great food.

Very good breakfast but seems to be an attitude with the staff, noticed it in the evenings as well, could be more friendly.

Highly recommended, one of the best restaurants in the UK. The food is exquisite so much so that I booked again the very next night. Try the Moules Moulenaire and the sea bass or the Exmoor venison. The belgian beer is a must to try and the hosts are friendly and make you feel very welcome, the only down side is that they are not open during the winter. I have driven from wiltshire just to eat there.

On a week's break with little choice in neighbouring Braunton we booked a meal for two at The Old Custom House and thank God we did. The seven course tasting menu contained some of the most beautifully cooked dishes we have ever had. From the salmon amuse bouche to the final triumphant liquorice laden dessert, the menu was both beautifully balanced and cooked. The choice of wines with each course was intelligent and original; the foie gras pate was served with a sweet dessert wine and the cheese with some wonderfully flavoured Churchill port. A personal favourite had to be the fantastically toothsome pea and feta mousse- a lightly whipped masterpiece topped with the freshest Somerset peas and salty feta. The Welsh lamb fillets were moist and perfectly pink and were complemented by a light potato fondant that was gorgeously rich. The service was enthusiastic and the young waiter was particularly adroit in his descriptions of the dishes and the accompanying wines. James had the courtesy and good grace to speak to us at the end of the meal and his passion for what he is doing at this place is infectious. It's time for the London-centric Michelin people to pay this place a visit and give the man what he deserves!

Recently had supper at the masons arms and have to say I was disappointed. Starters were strangely bland, fish main course was mean, no more than 4oz of halibut at best, chard accouplement unseasoned. Trio of pudding OK, souffle looked like the creme pat was old, had a almost split look to it although had risen a bit! Belly Pork main, not quite a seasonal summer dish in August! v bland. We never add extra seasoning but this food needed tones. Cheese course was very fridge cold and not at its best. Was if all boxes are being ticked for the fat tyer man but a bit of love missing in the food production. Food at 1 star level should be better than this. This is the first time I have been let down by the little red book!!

Lovely venue with good food and fab cocktails - all winning combinations except for the price of the cocktails, very expensive so a night out there is limited to just a couple of drinks. Shame because we would happily stay longer if the drinks were cheaper.

We visit the China House weekly, it is such a cosy pub where we catch up with friends or just chill out. The food has always been good, particularly the Duck Salad and are standard pub prices. Most of the staff are friendly and helpful but as already said it is the wonderful building and location that are the real reason we go. You can sit out on the balcony overlooking the yachts or inside on colder evenings where you can cosy up in a corner or in a big chair by the fire. A lovely pub to go with friends when you are looking for a relaxing drink.

We have just come back from a fantastic dinner at Piermasters. Apparently there is a new head chef, and we can't wait to recommend the kitchen for the great menu selection and fabulous food. My partner had seafood for both courses and raved about the scallops and the sea bass. I am not a huge fish fan so I opted for the duck and was impressed by both the presentation and the lovely combination of tastes. We'll be back!

Fine cooking, best in the bay.

Whenever we visited my mum in St Mary Church we booked into Memories. The food is amazing and freshly cooked and Hazel and the staff are so welcoming. I can not recommend this little gem of a Bistro highly enough-- it is a wonderful place with a great atmosphere.

I heard that piermasters had changed there chef, my party and I haven't eaten there for about a year because the food had really started to go down hill, BUT on monday night decided to go in and try out the new chef's food, it was delightful, the scallops where fresh and the crispy vegetables set it off really well (need to learn how to do that), for mains I had the fillet steak with tiger prawns which was cooked perfectly. My friend had the duck which looked amazing. Then for dessert the vanilla creme brulee WOW the best ever. Thank you for a great night we will be back.

The food at the Millbrook Inn is very surprising for such a small pub. The restaurant standard food included Foie Gras, Lobster, Seat Trout and the most incredible puddings. They are keen to use very local produce - their salad comes from a little beach just around the corner. Very pleasantly surprised to find this little jewel in such a remote place.
