The Halfway House at Grenofen is under new ownership and is West Devon's latest "gastro pub". The chefs come from The Dartmoor Union, Holbeton, and Tanners in Plymouth, and it shows - the food was absolutely superb on my first visit here. Neither my two highly discerning guests nor I could fault it. Downsides? The bar area is a bit cluttered - the furniture is too big for the limited space. The staff were very friendly and helpful, but a little chaotic - perhaps because they're all new to the job...and there were a couple of strange characters hanging around the doorway as we went in, which could have been off-putting to some. But overall our meal was very good. Beautiful local meat and fish, cooked to perfection with subtle sauces. And the price was very reasonable for a meal of such quality. The wine list is relatively limited but contained some good wines, and was excellent value. I shall certainly go again.

I recently attended a wedding at the duke of Cornwall hotel and could not fault it at all. The service was excellent and the food was outstanding. I highly recommend this hotel for anybody looking for quality.

Excellent pub with great atmosphere, great bubbly staff and wonderful food. Very good for families with children! The fish was absolutely superb and the chocolate pudding a delight! Wines good and everything really full of flavour and beautifully presented. Excellent chef

I felt this was very mediocre food at a very high price. For a family of four it was over £75 for a very average pub supper. No starters and puddings were over £5 each which is exorbitant in my opinion considering they were not very good at all. My fillet steak was okay but nothing special and the vegetable selection was quite mean and uninteresting. Flavour very limited and I was very disappointed. The waitress hardly welcomed us and took our menus away before we had ordered for another table which we found quite odd and somewhat rude.

i found the meal on the whole excellent and shall in future visit this friendly establishment.

From the moment we walked in we were treated as somewhat second class citizens. The first waitress dumped us at our table and we discovered we were the only customers not to have been offered any bread and olives, the service continued to be fairly haphazard throughout the night. The food however was very good, just right. Just enough on the plate and extremely tasty. The food was therefore worth returning for, but the service could certainly bear some improvement.

We and our friends always have our xmas lunch here and just cannot fault it. The lunch time and evening menu has something for everybody and the owners will make you feel at home, Bon Appetit.

Ive visited this restaurant many times. It is always a pleasure, whatever the choice from the menu. On the most recent visit with a group we were welcomed by a very cheerful, friendly and welcoming gent at the door, served great food at a good table and all left very happy. I couldnt recommend any Thai restaurant as highly.

Our visit today was very enjoyable and as a locals have always been very satisfied with both the food and the service provided. I would recommend it to my friends, even though today 2 roast potatoes on my wifes plate were cold, we did not let that spoil our meal, and the staff were very apologetic. We will certainly be paying further visits in the future.

This is a really fantastic place to eat. Small and cosy, with lots of atmosphere and truly great chefs doing interesting, delicious food with fresh local produce. This is better than Rick Stein!! It is a bit more expensive than some places but is far less poncey than The Angel and definitely worth it.

The Devon Dumpling, is a very pleasant place to spend an evening. And you need a very large appetite to be able to clear your plate of the wonderful food they serve. Would recommend everyone to try it.

The service at the Honeymoon is always excellent and the food is delicious. A wide choice of vegetarian and meat dishes at good prices, with the take away price being even better value for money.

The food at the Jack Russell is usually very pleasant if you do not go on a Friday or Saturday. The lunch time sandwiches and jacket potatoes are very well filled and fresh. Sadly, of an evening the pub is very understaffed in the dining room, with only one waitress working. Although she is very pleasant and helpful, she is run off her feet and for this reason it often takes a long time to get served. We have usually enjoyed a nice but not outstanding meal, with vegetarian, fish and meat options available. You get a good sized portion, also. This quality tends to take a dip, as mentioned, on weekend evenings. Recently some friends had an issue with under cooked lamb; when they sent it back the same meat was recooked and whacked back on the plate to be returned to the table, when they complained nothing was done by management. In short, this could be a really good local pub, but is still has a way to go to get there.

I have just returned from the Middle East and was interested to taste the food here. Overall, the food was good but not outstanding in any way. The feel of the place and the decor really makes this restaurant (although the low tables are a pain) and there are very friendly and knowledgeable staff. We had some of the orange cake after the recommendations on this site - it was very heavy and sickly, not my thing! I would recommend this restaurant for a large group or first date.

My friend and I ate here on a Friday evening - the food was exquisite and very reasonably priced. The pianist added to the ambiance without being intrusive. I would recommend this for an intimate dinner or just for a fantastic meal that won't break the bank.

My husband & I dated in 1999 and our first weekend break was spent in Dawlish. We had a drink in a local pub & asked for recommendations in places to eat and Hoi Shing was highly recommended by the landlady and customers there too. So we went there, the shop front was nothing special but inside was very nice. We had a excellent meal & the waitress was very friendly which made our 1st break very enjoyable. Since then we visit Dawlish at least twice a year & we always pay Hoi Shing a visit, we were surprised they remembered us the 2nd time we went there and they make our re-visits very welcoming. Now we have 2 children who also enjoy going there too as they always get free prawn crackers & Lollipops. Highly recommended. We also saw Gillian Taylorforth (From Eastenders & Footballers Wives) with her family there too.
