We were made to feel very welcome by the owners - nothing was too much trouble. The food was excellent especially from the Specials Board and the meet was delicious and sourced locally. After visiting the Mitre by chance, we came back time and again whilst holidaying locally

Mitre Inn – Tiverton
Dartmoor Inn The

We have eaten at the Dartmoor in three times and the standard has been the came it was gritty now have rooms but we are not able to stay as no dogs allowed in the rooms (shame) but thy are allowed in the bar. Great place all round.

Well, what a lovely pub/restaurant. Lovely thatched building nestling in the valley. Staff and ambience brilliant. Food both in bar and restaurant excellent. Lovely selection of wines and beers. Very popular so you need to book!

I am surprised that nobody has recommended this lovely pub/restaurant before. Really good menu with specials board and various 'theme' evenings. Food always excellent and staff very friendly and helpful. Good selection of wines. Lovely building with great garden for summer evenings. Would highly recommend

We always enjoy eating here, in my mind it is one of the best restaurants in Devon, if not the best in North Devon. We had a starter of cappuccino of Jerusalem artichoke which arrived looking just like a real coffee cappuccino - complete with froth, a dusting of truffle which resembled the chocolate powder and three cubes of freeze dried ceps to imitate the sugar lumps. This set the scene for the night admirably. My main of crusted lamb loin was expertly cooked and more than enough. My partner had the best goat's cheese starter ever followed by polenta with sun dried tomatoes and artichokes - all delicious. We couldn't decide on the puddings so we ordered three! A lavender creme brulee with rhubard sorbet, a chocolate marquis and selection of home-made icecreams - all were superb.

Courtyard Restaurant – Woolacombe

Stopped off for lunch after reading the reviews here, sat in the rear garden with sea views. A couple of glasses of lovely rose and a salad of artichoke and sweet peppers and my partner had a huge salmon & crab fishcake-both were delicious. Didn? want to be rude so we ordered what was the best chocolate fondant I have ever had-much better than Mr Ramsays. The summer berry jelly was also delicious. Job done we moved on.

Kings Arms – Dartmouth

I was encouraged to make the detour here by friends and they were not wrong. The drive to the pretty village was worth it, let alone the superb hospitality that we received. It was nice to be in such a friendly welcoming pub where everyone was relaxed and chatty. It was also wonderful to find somewhere where we could have Sunday lunch and take the dog (unfortunately for her there were no leftovers as it was all too good!) The ordered all three courses because they sounded delicious and were under £13 for all three! As a vegetarian it is very difficult to find a decent Sunday lunch but here I had a starter of grilled goat's cheese salad and then an amazing veggie Wellington with all the trimmings. My partner raved about his home-made pate and the ruby red Devon beef and Exmoor Ale Yorkshire pudding. We both couldn't resist having Chef Deborah's signature hot chocolate pudding and it was delicious. I only wish I lived near this pub so I could go all the time.

Grove Inn The – Umberleigh
The Arsonist

Had lunch outside the front, watching the world go by. We tae a wonderfully fresh gilt head bream simply cooked with a champ mash and a few side dishes. Washed down with an excellent Italian white wine. Couldn? fault it. definitely the best in the town and worth a visit for the decor.

The Quay – Ilfracombe

Excellent meal. The food was of quality and presented beautifully. Orders were taken at the table once we were able to be seated (15 min wait). Real Ales, wide range of wines and a lovely atmosphere.

The best Chinese restaurant in this area; nice atmosphere and not too pricey. Quite an extensive menu and prompt service. Highly recommended

Golden House Chinese Restaurant and TakeAway – Axminster

Visited August 06 twice within 3days. The menu was varied with a specials board containing a very wide choice. This pub has plenty of parking - it wont be a secret for very long with good food...like this. I would recommend the monkfish and the summer pud with clotted cream!

Tradesmans Arms – Kingsbridge

Perched on a little country lane north of Torquay Orestone Manor, a colonial style boutique hotel, initially seemed to present that most terrifying of situations - walking into an empty restaurant with a firm booking. Usually my philosophy on empty restaurants is to pass them by, but this was a different case, since Orestone Manor has a Michelin Star. Cocktails - in my case a delicious Kir Royale evidently made with a decent enough champagne - were served on the Colonial deck and we then repaired to the dinning room where an eclectic collection of fine art shared space with both an elegant elephant bedecked wine cupboard and a hanging Chinese dragon. Curiously, half way through our meal our eastern European waitress was replaced by Tom, evidently a local, but service was excellent and Tom proved very capable when we asked him to explain what ingredients made up Kate's strawberry gazpacho dessert. I had fishcakes with poached eggs to start - the lightly bound fish reminding me of a more rustic version of Thai fishcakes. Confit of duck leg followed and was as perfect as the dish can be. I went for a cheese plate rather than a sweet dessert but tried the strawberry gazpacho, which was delicious too. The cheese plate was remarkably substantial, particularly bearing in mind that we were eating the set lunch menu at ~£20 a head. Overall Orestone Manor really hit all my buttons - a setting with lots of character, charming service, a good bar, excellent food and a pleasing degree of communication from the kitchen. I shall definitely be back.

There were nine of us booking at the last minute (rained off family barbecue). We found the staff polite and helpful, they were especially kind with my disabled mother. The service was swift, the food tasty and the portions big enough to make my nephew and niece's mouths open in amazement and say ?ow? An excellent meal, great fun; we plan to return.

It's all about respect. There's no doubt that the chefs at Michael Caines' respect their ingredients: everything is cooked and arranged on the plate with a technical skill and precision which can only be admired. The flavours are subtle and sing as clearly as a pure musical note, if perhaps a little short of the unusual or imaginative combinations, the "wow" factor that you might hope for at this end of the market. There's also no doubt that if you are there on a date, your companion will respect your ability to hand over around £100 for three courses for two people - more if you drink your wine by the bottle rather than the glass - without whimpering. The only question is whether serving up food at these prices in portions which border on the nouvelle (where DO they find such small scallops?), and then charging extra for vegetables, really shows a lot of respect for their customers. It's your choice. If you want faultless food and are willing to pay handsomely for it, this is the place for you; if you want something less fussy and more filling, perhaps there are other establishments around to better suit your needs.
