Montys – PlymouthMy wife and I run a country B&B near Dartmouth. We regularly visit and monitor local restaurants, so that our guests are properly informed. Of the many guests staying here who have recently dined at the award winning New Angel in Dartmouth, those who have also dined at the Kings Arms have all confirmed that there is absolutely nothing to choose between the top quality of both restaurants, although the Kings Arms is considerably less expensive.
Kings Arms – Dartmouthsuperb - makes every other restaurant in the area look very average.
The Salty Monk – SidmouthFine local seafood in a great building. The Owner Simon Brown was so friendly and the rest of the staff made us so welcombe. The art is not all to my taste but makes for an interesting meal. Highly recommend this place for a stunning meal or just a quick bite and a beer in the bar overlooking the harbour. Take a look at teh pics on there website www.11thequay.co.uk
The Quay – IlfracombeI've visited here countless times and will continue to. Whatever you do - don't miss the carvery - it's the best in North Devon!
Williams Arms – Brauntona really good meal, only next time i'd avoid the anglicised 'starters' and go for the pure japanese. my wasabi steak was excellent though, i even managed to eat it with chopsticks! great atmosphere, good value
Yukisan – Plymouthwe had an excellent meal, again, this time with kids and their grandparents. all enjoyed the food and no-one chose from the traditional menu. how authentic it's hard to say, but if you're bored of the usual indian this is the place to try. modern decor too
Cafe Indiya – PlymouthThis has to be the most exciting restaurant in Plymouth, the food is superb, fresh, flavourful and light, none of this thick heavy over MSGd kind of thing. Pure flavours, I had the seabass, it was stunning. I have been back since and tried the sashimi ans sushi as well as yakatori. Cannot fault it. well done. NB whenever I have been there has been a lot of Japanese eating here, that must say something.
Yukisan – PlymouthExcellent service, very quick and friendly. Fresh hot food. Great live music in relaxed atmosphere- Tues night. Will go back!
Blues Bar and Grill – PlymouthI have travelled around America extensively and this place is by far the most Amercian place I have encountered in the UK since the fall of TGIs. The food is such great quality and cheap when compared to other restaurants of this kind and the very friendly staff were only too happy to help with my fussy dietary requirements. When I make such demands, a restaurant rarely gets it right but Starz did. Their wine list is authentically amercian and top class. I will certainly return. The bar downstairs is classy and worth checking out too.
Starz Bar and Restaurant – Exeterreally good coffee, relaxed place, not too pricey, friendly staff
Montys – PlymouthWe tend to visit here everytime we visit my in-laws who live in Kingsteignton. There's so much to look at around the place - all the signs, etc - you could go in here on your own and not get bored! What a good place. It's tucked away though and we only found it the first time by accident.
Old Timers Wine Bar and Restaurant – ExeterWhat a gem - not on the High Street so you have to find it... Now we know where the locals go to eat and why they keep stum about it as they know what? best and this place is excellent. Amazing food as good as you will get and great atmosphere and service don't just let the locals have it all their own way!
The Orange Tree Restaurant – TorquayA small local pub with food way above expectations and some good ales. A varied menu includes pub favourites alongside more exotic fare; butterfish steaks, moroccan lamb casserole and more. Occasionally game is available, and this is very local and top quality. Wild rabbit with mushroom is fantastic, as are the partridge with bacon and the venison. The decor is dated, but the welcome is warm, as is the large fire in the grate.
New Inn The – BarnstapleThe A la carte menu may be expensive compared to other local restaurants, but the quality of the food, ambiance and service is head and shoulders above most of the competition. To save money, we went for the early-bird fixed price menu, which offers no choice (although they varied the main course for a vegetarian) but was great value for money. A smooth and creamy parsnip soup, a robust and hearty Daube of Beef (a towering and colourful Mediterranean tart for the veggie) and 'Eton Mess' to finish. Two glasses of wine, water and tip and it was still under £50 for two. Great view from the Atlantic room, some fabulous artwork on the walls and some nice design touches in the decor came for free. Thoroughly recommended
The Quay – IlfracombeWe had a fantastic night, I will definitely go again .The staffs were lovely & polite .On the food outstanding for money, you can tell the best quality was used. They also do not have children in the restaurant under 7. Which I thought was good, and not after 9pm and have a separate family room. The ambience was beautiful, little glowing lights and dim lighting and music played softly .The people dining were chatting to the other tables. What a restaurant!
La Gendarmerie – IlfracombeWe dined here recently during the week expecting it to be quite quiet, what a surprise to find the place buzzing, a real mixture of people, some post cinema some looked like they were having a dinner party at home. We were immediately lifted by the atmosphere and quickly got the wine ordered, I really fancied a good bottle and Charlotte recommended a top Australian from the bin end racks, it arrived properly decanted and complete with two awesome glasses. Food wise we both ordered Scallops in Bacon, a massive portion of beautifully cooked scallops arrived with crusty bread. We had to leave some to make room for our mains, I ordered the mildly spiced Indian Lamb with mash, again the portion huge and very good too, my partner opted for the smoked chicken dish which she loved. We had a great night, will definitely go again and recommend it.
Bistro One – PlymouthAn excellent meal. Fantastic pub and restaurant fully recommended. Make sure you book for a table as its very popular with locals and alike.
California Inn – IvybridgeRoasted topside of beef, Slow-cooked belly pork or Homemade nut roast served with all the trimmings, £16.95.
Sunday Menu: 2 courses, £31; 3 courses, £39.50.
