Thai Palace The – PlymouthMy favourite pub in England. The atmosphere is special, the views across the fabulous beach breathtaking and the food is excellent with big hearty portions. The only problem is getting in during peak periods, where waiting is often necessary for a seat. But the backdrop of surfing memorabilia certainly adds to the charm of the place, with classic 'boards from the 50's and 60's hanging from the ceiling. Expect to pay £7-£10 for a meal, with the sunday lunch (£6.50 Aug 03) being the best I've had.
Red Barn – Woolacombelovely fresh fish and chips...very popular with locals
Start Bay Inn – KingsbridgeWe have been here about three times now and it just gets better. The service is a little more relaxed now which is nice. Food is all excellent, from the olives and bread to the perfectly cooked vegetables and delicious main dishes. Thw wine list is well chosen and very reasonable - check out their wine specials. Book well in advance as they are almost always full.
Conservatory The – Exeterthere was a good, friendly atmosphere at the pub and everyone was very friendly. the food was very good for a reasonable price and the drink was good too.
Butterleigh Inn The – ExeterThis is a great place for a part - lively happy music and a real sense of fun. The menu is incredible and the portions are huge. Frozen margaritas are great and there are too many tequilas to count.
Jingles – TorquayThis place is the BEST place I have eaten in ever. I have gone back time and time again because you are made to feel so special here. The manager is always around to talk to and the staff, well that is a treat in it's self, warm, polite and very helpful. My 14 year old sister was in love with a couple of waiters and didn't know which way to turn. They cater for all walks of life as well as disabled people as I have a disabled brother. I have recommend this place to all my friends and my family loved it greatly. This is the one and only place to visit when in Exeter. I love it. Does that come across that I like this place? I think so.
Starz Bar and Restaurant – Exeterthe first time we went, my husband and I were astonished at the size of the portions. We had read the excellent review in the Devon Life (April 2004) which we couldn't quite believe. However, since going back again and again (sometimes 2 times a week), we know we have discovered the very best seafood restaurant in the whole of Torbay. Unfortunately, to this date, we have been unable to have a table in the window overlooking Brixham harbour. These are snapped up in advance very early, so we would recommend anyone to book very early. The staff are "in tune" with the dishes and can answer any queries. This is a plus! They are also very attention and pleasant. We will continue to go to the Poopdeck indefinitely.
Poopdeck – BrixhamNot a cheap restaurant - budget at least 50 quid a head, and be prepared to be wowed. We felt is was more than worth what we paid. Starting with delicately tempting canapes served in front of a real fire, the meal just got better and better. The restaurant has an awesome view down the Tamar valley, the service was attentive but not intrusive, and the food was very possibly the best meal I've ever had. Save up, then go and enjpy it!
Horn Of Plenty – TavistockIt had a friendly & cosy atmosphere in this country inn, we felt at home & staff were lovely. They can go one even better they have letting rooms so you eat in the restaurant, drink in the bar & crawl upstairs to your room. In conclusion, food, drink, bed & great atmosphere all under one roof, what more can we say...
Anchor Inn The – BidefordThe Albert Inn in Totnes is one of those rarest of pubs that has, thankfully, been left unspoilt by?efurbishment?by the breweries. It is so unspoilt, in fact that there is no TV. If you feel like watching the football and chucking beer around, you need to go somewhere else. the pub is known more for encouraging the art of conversation. The cosy freehouse is owned and run by Tim and Susan Langsford who have had many years?experience in the pub trade, having run the Kingsbridge Inn in Totnes and the Queen? Arms at Dartington over the years. You can always be assured of a warm welcome and good home-cooked food at very reasonable prices with a frequently updated specials board - example - Steak and Ale pie with a mountain of veg and potatoes or chips for £4.95. On tap are various lagers and beers with real ales and weekly-changing guest ale ans well as more than 40 different whiskies. The pub features a bar side and a smaller lounge/snug and a sizeable beer garden overlooking the River Dart.
Albert Inn The – TotnesOld Timers is one of Exeter's best restaurants. The atmosphere and food is very unpretentious offering quality recognisable food that is cooked and presented wonderfully. The staff go out of their way to ensure that your evening is satisfactory. I had the Greek Salad as a starter followed by the duck as a main course. I would strongly recommend the duck as the porions were generous and cooked beautifully. The house red was also very good. The restaurant is conveniently placed just a few yards from the centre of the high street and stumbling distance from Timepiece night club making it a very good place to have dinner when celebrating or having work functions.
Old Timers Wine Bar and Restaurant – ExeterNow I am not a fan of pizza houses but Zizzi's in Exeter is more than that. Against all my better judgment I am also not a huge fan of national chains unless they have a very good product you can always rely on. Zizzis has all of this I feel. I eat at Zizzi's regularly and its main outstanding features are its ambience: warming, cosy and intimate even with such a large space. The trademark oven with chefs cooking infront of you is always a comfort and distraction if your food is taking a while (which it never has). The staff are very friendly and do give a genuine impression of caring for their customers. As a red wine drinker, the wine list humbling, even their house red. Their food is made very well and the portions are generous. I normally eat the Capriciossa pizza with rocket side salad and the large house Merlot. Again, it is pizza and pasta but done in a way that doesn't scream turnstile. I would recommend it to anyone and look forward to my next time there.
Zizzi – ExeterMill on the Exe is a curious restaurant with a great location. The unique feature is the attached mill which is always a pleasure to watch in the summer time with a sprawling beer garden. However, food is not served all day. Parking is adequate. The food is possibly slightly overpriced for what it is but arguably you are paying for the ambience.
Mill On The Exe The – ExeterAnother chain in Exeter which brings with it the expectation of the same menu, service, and ambience to be expected from a nationwide establishment. I have enjoyed late lunches at Cafe Rouge, especially their salads. The wine list is above adequate. Their best feature would have to be their staff which are very friendly and approachable. Only possibly negative is that as a non-smoker, I am never sat far away enough from the smokers and I think the restaurant could benefit from being non-smoking or expanding upstairs.
Bella Italia – ExeterBoston Tea Party is one of my favourites for the summer time and makes fresh tasting food with an adventurous, satisfying menu. The staff are always very friendly and it oozes personality and individuality: something missing from most coffee-style houses. It is has a very personal touch. My favourite is their avocado wrap and their fresh juices. You can take away wraps and sandwiches which makes for a fulfilling lunch which is worth the extra walk from the supermarkets in the high street. Boston Tea Party is nothing short of trendy.
Boston Tea Party – ExeterI found the only thing that lets this pub/restaurant down is the unfriendlyness of the staff.
Coombe Cellars Inn – TorquayIt is what I expected of an ASK which goes many ways. The consistency of quality is upheld, however, I did not find the portions filling and I was left looking around for staff frequently without much attention. It is placed in an idealic setting by the cathedral and I believe is one of the nicer places to eat during the summer time. For a 'pizza' house, I find that the menu is unadventurous and not competitive with many other similar restaurants in Exeter. Many pizza style eateries are close-by and nothing about ASK screams at me to pick on them except for the possible safety in a known chain. Booking for larger parties at lunch in advisable end of week and possibly mandatory for evening dining. However, small numbers mid-week is safe.
ASK – ExeterSunday Menu: 2 courses, £31; 3 courses, £39.50.
