The Maharaja seems to be one of Liverpool's best kept secrets. In one way, now I've discovered it, I'd like it to stay that way, so that it can maintain its wonderful standards and unhurried ambience. But on the other hand, I'm concerned that being a little off the beaten track it's missing out on many potential customers, and possibly may struggle to survive. The food is SO DIFFERENT - but oh SO GOOD. The first time we ate there, it was with four friends all of whom had been to Kerala and they all said it was so reminiscent of their times there. With the help of the ever so friendly staff, we chose a range of veggie and non-veggie (mainly fish) dishes and just shared them all. Everything was wonderful, but just to mention a few. The pre-meal nibbles and freshly prepared pickles (not a giant poppadom or dollop of gloopy mango chutney in sight). The Keralan fish. The squid massala. The fried aubergine, I could go on. We ate well, enjoyed a variety of flavours and textures. We also drank beer and wine and the bill still only came to about £18 each. Try the Maharaja for yourself, I guarantee you won't be disappointed - then tell your friends.
