We had a great meal at Tassili on 16/9/11. We found the food excellent and the service even better. We would second everything in Judith and Ozzie reviews.

Just outside the city walls and away from the tourist traps Tassili is a real gem. The menu has a mouth watering array of North African dishes which are even better than their descriptions and the service is relaxed and professional. We are envious of the locals..

Last stayed here about 15 years ago and it was nice to get back to this beautiful part of the world. Helmsley is a pretty little market town and the Black Swan is an ancient pub that overlooks the main square. It now has a lot more rooms than before and we stayed in one of the more modern ones overlooking the pretty garden. The restaurant is excellent with great service, good food, plenty of space and a good wine list. They also have a new tearoom which wasn’t there before.

Restaurant visited with a 2 for 1 voucher for their Sunday Roast offer, which is actually a bit of a tourist con. Contrary to the illustration on the voucher the actual food on the plate for £10 was a slice of rare beef (which was very good) a dried out Yorkshire pudding and three 'seen better days' roast potatoes and no other vegetables. The service was almost adequate, but dismissive when points about the menu were raised and the drinks service was appalling. The setting looks nice; decent brickwork and typically York old building stripped bare, but nonetheless uncomfortable seating. Much better choices of places to eat exist on this street. I for one will not be returning.

The food and service at this restaurant are spot on. I would definitely recommend it to anyone. I moved to York over a month ago and have sampled quite a few different restaurants, but this is by far the overall best!!

A wonderful place to stay or to eat. Their little Bistro which is the tea room during the day is particularly good. (But it isn't open every day at night.) Best steak and great chips I've had in ages. Well worth a visit. As a place to stay its expensive but luxurious. Staff are fantastic. You can eat there if you are a non resident.

We went in this restaurant on a Wednesday afternoon as soon as it opened at 5pm. We received excellent service throughout, the restaurant was clean and comfortable, and the prices very reasonable. The food was the real star though, we had a main course from the barbecue/grill and a traditional main course, as well as mixed meze starters, and everything that came was delicious and very good quality. I would order everything we chose again, but would really like to work my way through the entire menu! We will definitely be going again!

We went for dinner here while staying in a holiday cottage nearby. I was very much looking forward to our visit as I had heard of this Inn and was aware that it had been awarded a Michelin Star. First impressions were very good, we had a drink in the main bar and were brought an amuse bouche while we looked through the menu. The draft beer in the bar got the thumbs up as did the friendly service. We were taken through to the main restaurant part of the Inn and shown to a luxuriously large table, set with a vast array of cutlery. The decor in the restaurant was not as charming as the more rustic bar, it was, to me, a bit cruise liner, but what really let the dining room down was that it was not clean. There were food stains (looked like old mashed potato) on the fabric dividing panels which had clearly been there a while! The bathroom was nice but the basket for the hand towels was almost empty and therefore clearly full of dust. Minor things, but I expected so much better. Also there was only one ladies loo, and for the number of covers this seemed insufficient. The food was the main point though, and everything we had was very nice, but not earth shattering. The menu didn't offer any surprises, but if you're looking for posh pub grub then this is spot on. The table service was good and we were made very welcome, but overall, we probably won't make a repeat visit.

I love this restaurant! The location and setting is really unexpected and very lovely. We first went on New Year's Eve, and made a last minute table reservation. We had a special set menu which included some really exciting things I would probably not have thought to order off a menu, such as chicken wrapped in banana leaves and fried (amazing!). On other visits since, we have never been disappointed, the food is always delicious and beautiful, the service excellent and the price reasonable. We may well go back again this new year!

Visited recently, would never go again, had to wait 45 minutes for starter this was at 7.30pm and only half full. Service very poor they virtually threw rice on to table, food average. had to ask for cutlery, staff off hand. When clearing table dropped dirty cutlery on laps of customers, no apology. Back to the Viceroy and Jinnah for us

Not recommended. Food quality was poor and cold. Real ale was off! Does has good view of minster rooftops, but comes at a price as surroundings are dirty.

I have visited Tassili twice in the last month and have been amazed by the ambiente and quality of their food and service. Dining at Tassili makes you feel as if you are on holiday, the decor and accessories underpin the oriental flair. The service is perfect, staff are attentive yet not intrusive and the choice of different dishes is excellent and the food tastes superb. I particularly liked the option of ordering a starter as a slightly bigger portion - ideal for a late meal. I would highly recommend a visit.

i go to the Black Bull all the time and I love it !! There fish and chips are amazing!! specially followed by there freshly made beautiful sticky toffee pudding!! Or if a quiet drink is what your looking forward to its perfect with a great ales, beers and wine. I would recommend any body!!

we were recommended the olive tree by the Saxon house b and b in york.we wanted somewhere extra special because we were in york for my treat weekend for my birthday. yes it was dearer than any other place we had been but it was worth every penny the food was the best I've ever tasted and the service was extra special too thank you for a wonderful birthday meal .
