The best Chinese restaurant in this area; nice atmosphere and not too pricey. Quite an extensive menu and prompt service. Highly recommended

Visited August 06 twice within 3days. The menu was varied with a specials board containing a very wide choice. This pub has plenty of parking - it wont be a secret for very long with good food...like this. I would recommend the monkfish and the summer pud with clotted cream!

Perched on a little country lane north of Torquay Orestone Manor, a colonial style boutique hotel, initially seemed to present that most terrifying of situations - walking into an empty restaurant with a firm booking. Usually my philosophy on empty restaurants is to pass them by, but this was a different case, since Orestone Manor has a Michelin Star. Cocktails - in my case a delicious Kir Royale evidently made with a decent enough champagne - were served on the Colonial deck and we then repaired to the dinning room where an eclectic collection of fine art shared space with both an elegant elephant bedecked wine cupboard and a hanging Chinese dragon. Curiously, half way through our meal our eastern European waitress was replaced by Tom, evidently a local, but service was excellent and Tom proved very capable when we asked him to explain what ingredients made up Kate's strawberry gazpacho dessert. I had fishcakes with poached eggs to start - the lightly bound fish reminding me of a more rustic version of Thai fishcakes. Confit of duck leg followed and was as perfect as the dish can be. I went for a cheese plate rather than a sweet dessert but tried the strawberry gazpacho, which was delicious too. The cheese plate was remarkably substantial, particularly bearing in mind that we were eating the set lunch menu at ~£20 a head. Overall Orestone Manor really hit all my buttons - a setting with lots of character, charming service, a good bar, excellent food and a pleasing degree of communication from the kitchen. I shall definitely be back.

There were nine of us booking at the last minute (rained off family barbecue). We found the staff polite and helpful, they were especially kind with my disabled mother. The service was swift, the food tasty and the portions big enough to make my nephew and niece's mouths open in amazement and say ?ow? An excellent meal, great fun; we plan to return.

It's all about respect. There's no doubt that the chefs at Michael Caines' respect their ingredients: everything is cooked and arranged on the plate with a technical skill and precision which can only be admired. The flavours are subtle and sing as clearly as a pure musical note, if perhaps a little short of the unusual or imaginative combinations, the "wow" factor that you might hope for at this end of the market. There's also no doubt that if you are there on a date, your companion will respect your ability to hand over around £100 for three courses for two people - more if you drink your wine by the bottle rather than the glass - without whimpering. The only question is whether serving up food at these prices in portions which border on the nouvelle (where DO they find such small scallops?), and then charging extra for vegetables, really shows a lot of respect for their customers. It's your choice. If you want faultless food and are willing to pay handsomely for it, this is the place for you; if you want something less fussy and more filling, perhaps there are other establishments around to better suit your needs.

The Souk had a fantastic atmosphere, for a minute I thought i was really in Marakesh! I tried loads of different vegetarian mezze which all tasted equally fabulous. I followed them with some orange cake and a mint tea and I certainly left completely satiated - with the food and the atmosphere, and a little heady from the good wine and the apple sheesha that i followed my meal with . Cant wait to go back -

I have eaten at Yukisan several times and unlike other restaurants the food was sublime on each occasion, we have introduced our 5 year old son to the restaurant and he now asks for sushi for dinner all the time!!! The lunchtime menu is very good too and the bento boxes delicious.

After hearing great things about this place we had to visit. We were told it was expensive, well if a three course lunch for £16 for great food, service and place to dine is expensive what? cheap? Great local produce cooked to perfection! Served in a relaxed but professional manner. All in all a great venue, Can't wait to visit again or try their new venture the 'barbican kitchen'

Lunch is superb there - when its open! Successfully got to try the much acclaimed vegetarian food on the 3rd visit 2 weeks back. Delicious mango lassi too. Have since tried to go back for more (twice)- to no avail. Must ring to make sure the place is open.

The Cook Island was an ideal stop off point travelling from the Beach at Woolacombe to Ilfracombe and the food and service was good here and an added advantage was a children's game room along with pool table

Fantastic food & atmosphere. The Tanners have got it right again with the style of service & food, knowledgeable staff who were very friendly & only to happy to help. Would recommend it to any one but would advise you to book in advance as it gets very busy, cant wait till my next visit.

My Husband and I visited the tapas bar last weekend on a night away trip to ilfracombe (the tapas bar was recommended to us by our B&B). I am Spanish & have lived in London for 3 years & have not had such good authentic tapas since moving here, the Gambas Pil Pil was perfect & such good value for money as was the the Albarino Wine. The service was also very special they employ spanish waitresses on university holiday to help them in the restaurant & also to help the girls improve their english, (which must be commended as most people would not be bothered to put themselves out!) I look forward to returning to Ilfracombe very soon, not only for the beautiful scenery but to eat at the Tapas Bar for home from home cooking.

I am truly surprised at the suggestion that the menu was small. I took my wife and a friend there in early July, 2006 and was offered an extensive a la carte or chef's special menus. Will certainly go again. Although pricey, the food experience was wonderful
