We were recommended Horse and Farrier by our host at Barton Hall, Pooley Bridge, in 2023. We were impressed by menu, food and atmosphere. For our 2025 trip, we made reservations well ahead of time for two dinners. No word of a lie, we overheard a number of other tables mention that they make a point of dining at H&F when they are in the district.

Lewis’s Bistro – GrasmereUnfortunately the meal was not very good, tasteless and really inedible. The pizza seemed undercooked and just too much cheese, the Carbonara had very little taste. We've been a few times but really not good this time.

Queens Head Inn Tirril – PenrithCancelled my booking (twice) and yet still received this feedback. I was staying very near to the restaurant which was rarely open & when it was it was devoid of customers. Sorry but I couldn’t face sitting in a bleak restaurant with hardly any diners.
Goody Blake’s – GrasmereFood was lovely, staff lovely, atmosphere lovely. And bonus the dogs where welcome too. Couldn't fault the pub. Everyone was so friendly and portions were very generous. It was nice to chat with family whilst we were on our holiday. I highly recommend this pub We will be back when we come back to the lakes.

The Wheatsheaf at Beetham – MilnthorpeWe were recommended the Wheatsheaf by friends and were glad we went. The staff were friendly and efficient and the food was good pub food that had a bit more zing! We share are food, swapping plates halfway so we both get to taste the others choice. I ordered fish and chips as were near the sea - a good sized piece of fish, though the chips were a bit less generous, but all delicious with proper homemade tartare sauce to top it off. My husband had the salmon with oriental coleslaw. The salmon was cooked to perfection and the slaw was the zing that lifted it with flavour. Puddings were delicious - apple and blackberry crumble and chocolate brownie, both with vanilla ice cream. The staff oiled the wheels of a good spot by being friendly, attentive and helpful. All in all, I would recommend the Wheatsheaf as a place to go.

Adriano’s Italian Restaurant – CarlisleRecommended this place by a couple of people who had been before. On the whole a lovely experience, friendly staff. Very dog friendly and both mine and my husband’s pies were really tasty. However, I really do have to say one thing…. Please, please do not advertise “creamy mash” at an extra £2 to other potato options when it was only rustic mash with lumps and certainly not smooth creamy mash. Sorry guys but this really was the only thing that let the meal down.

Grants Of Castlegate – PenrithWhat an amazing find! We were looking for a convenient city centre location as we were dropping our daughter off at the station and this was really handy. But much more than that. It was superb. The service attentive, the ambience pleasing and the food itself absolutely outstanding. We had a variety of sharing plates and each one was distinctive and delicious. Thank you for a brilliant meal!
