The Red Dragon Inn, Kirkby Lonsdale(Recommended by Red)

Simple solid pub grub with friendly service in a very pretty little village. Also the quality of their bitter Dizzy Blond made me want to ditch my car and stay the night!

Augill Castle
Augill Castle, Kirkby Stephen(Recommended by Nat)

What a place! Enjoyed a wonderful night at the castle. We chose our room , the Langdale. It was a real treat to have a real fire in our room as we went to sleep. Up in the morning for a fine breakfast followed by a game of tennis on the castle's picturesque court. Then a walk up to the "9 standards" after looking at the nearby ruins of Brough Castle.

Netherwood Hotel, Grange-over-Sands(Recommended by Maggie)

Wonderful hotel with character. Beautiful views over Morcambe Bay. The thing I noticed was how immaculate the place was. The rooms are great value. Will be back.

Tweedies Bar, Grasmere(Recommended by Houseworkempress)

After reading several good, no great reviews, we decided to try it out. First impression was good, great atmosphere, excellent waitress and starters. The main courses however were disastrous. My calves liver had the texture of having been steamed and was practically liquid in the middle; one mouthful left me heaving. Whilst my husbands beef medallions looked nicely seared, they too had the texture of being steamed!! Maybe the old chef has left but these meals were certainly not Michelin standard.

Sunny Hill The, Whitehaven(Recommended by Terry Lynch)

I ate there last Tuesday evening. There were eight of us at the table and the staff gave us a genuine warm welcome. The meals were of a high quality and quite ample portions and were well cooked. The service was very good and the time lapse between ordering and the meals arriving at the table was quicker than expected considering that the place was quite busy. As to whether I would go again, my wife has just booked for a party of seventeen for next Tuesday. I really enjoyed it.

George And Dragon
George And Dragon, Penrith(Recommended by Wirralot)

I am so surprised that there are no reader reviews for this truly exceptional pub/restaurant. Several newspaper reviews have been made and awards made. Me and my Wife found this place on sugarvine and went to the George and Dragon's excellent website with video and stopped off on the way up to Scotland a few weeks ago. The location is ideal for those travelling north or south on the M6 in cumbria, carlisle region. The ambience - stunning, truly tranquil with real fires in the pub and reception and in the restaurant. Several dogs were lazily sprawled in front of the fires, truly welcoming ambience. The staff - very well presented, welcoming and relaxed. They made conversation yet also respected your privacy. Food service was excellent. THE FOOD - What a treat. We selected Pauls Double baked cheese souffle and Pan Fried Mackerel Starter - both truly devine. The cheese souffle is the chef's signature dish, this is a very strong flavour and milk pudding like texture, so choose your main wisely following this starter. The main - we both had the most fabulous burger beautifully presented with salad garnish - Shorthorn Beef Burger from beef sourced form the estate nearby. You probably won't need side orders with the shorthorn burger - very filling and satisfying. We didn't go for dessert but promised ourselves we would be back for a full treat three courses and hopefully some wine next time. While there we were very patiently shown all the available accommodation - lovely accommodation in nice location. Staff were honest and stated which rooms would be affected by the noise of the extractor of the kitchen. Accommodation was over-priced for us, but probably worth it if you want a lovely weekend away with access to fabulous food and drink on site. Worth considering for a short break. TRY THIS PLACE - YOU WON'T REGRET IT - A GREAT STOP OFF FROM THE M6MOTORWAY
