Interesting menu. Food well presented and very tasty. Friendly, efficient service. All together, an excellent dining experience.

We were recommended Horse and Farrier by our host at Barton Hall, Pooley Bridge, in 2023. We were impressed by menu, food and atmosphere. For our 2025 trip, we made reservations well ahead of time for two dinners. No word of a lie, we overheard a number of other tables mention that they make a point of dining at H&F when they are in the district.

We were passing through Penrith en route from the Hebrides to down south and booked a table at Grants. The food was really delicious and the service was fabulous - thank you.

Can't fault the food we had at Grant's of Castlegate - everything was delicious. Would highly recommend if you are looking for great food and a warm welcome. :)

Superb Sunday roast beef lunch. Had pate for starter also very tasty.

Excellent Sunday roast! Group of 14 and we all had brilliant meals. Highly recommend. Would be good to offer a vegetarian roast would be my only feedback.

Excellent meal which we both thoroughly enjoyed (we had the Lamb rib and Duck breast). Nice drinks too, Friendly efficient service. Good cheesebord too.. Only (very small) "critisim" is that meal is as-is with no potatoes etc... but still plentyful.

Great food and service

If you are looking for somewhere to go in Penrith for a delicious meal, Grants of Castlegate is the place to try. Always a very warm welcome with beautifully cooked and very tasty food. Well worth a try.

13th August. Enjoyed a lovely dinner for three. The starters and main courses were very thoughtfully put together. There were unusual and lovely combinations of flavours. Loved the heritage beetroot salad starter. Our son who is a real foodie was very impressed. Beer very good as well (fine local craft ales). Service was prompt, efficient and friendly. We'll be back

Excellent meal, delicious flavours and presentation amazing

Beautifully cooked, tasty and interesting food served with friendly discretion. Lots of choice for meat eaters and delicious vegetarian options available. A real gastronomic treat.

Excellent food with lovely friendly staff. Were really accommodating with my granddaughter.

Food was excellent. Could not fault steak pie & chicken pie. Service was very good too.

We were staying locally at Matterdale so had booked for lunch in advance, a true gem of a find!! - Lovely pub, great staff, brilliant selection of local beers, fantastic food, big portions - my fiance and I could only manage to eat a half of each of our lunchtime sandwiches, so we asked for them to be boxed up for us to finnish later - one half of my sandwich was accidently binned in the kitchen, so bless them, the made a whole fresh sandwich for me to take away - truly excellent customer service! will definitely be back next time we stay in the area. Keep up the good work all!!
