A hidden gem. Consistently good on all fronts. Excellent food, service and atmosphere. A varied menu with daily specials. Welcoming as a lunch or dinner destination or just for a drink. They always have a good selection of local beers.

Grants Of Castlegate – PenrithWe were recommended Horse and Farrier by our host at Barton Hall, Pooley Bridge, in 2023. We were impressed by menu, food and atmosphere. For our 2025 trip, we made reservations well ahead of time for two dinners. No word of a lie, we overheard a number of other tables mention that they make a point of dining at H&F when they are in the district.

Horse and Farrier – PenrithExcellent meal which we both thoroughly enjoyed (we had the Lamb rib and Duck breast). Nice drinks too, Friendly efficient service. Good cheesebord too.. Only (very small) "critisim" is that meal is as-is with no potatoes etc... but still plentyful.

Grants Of Castlegate – Penrith13th August. Enjoyed a lovely dinner for three. The starters and main courses were very thoughtfully put together. There were unusual and lovely combinations of flavours. Loved the heritage beetroot salad starter. Our son who is a real foodie was very impressed. Beer very good as well (fine local craft ales). Service was prompt, efficient and friendly. We'll be back
