The Wheatsheaf at Beetham – MilnthorpeSunday lunch. Choice of beef or roasted celeriac. The beef is sirloin thick cut slices, perfectly cooked and best quality, served with a real Yorkshire pud and real gravy. Only the congenitally greedy would ask for more. Generous servings of veg, family style. Roasties, carrot, hispi, cauliflower in a cheesy mustardy sauce. Followed up with pudding; proper apple crumble, real egg custard. The atmosphere is warm, cosy and family with great big tables and a roaring wood-burner in the corner. Lovely staff, clearly busy but always charming and cheerful. Fab, like a great-big hug of the best of half-forgotton Sundays past.
Harry’s Cafe Bar at Yew Tree Barn – Grange-over-SandsBeen before and food was of the same high standard but felt short changed as only had one very small piece of beef - would have expected at least twice as much. There were some very loud children nearby but can’t blame the cafe for the lack of parenting skills shown
Harry’s Cafe Bar at Yew Tree Barn – Grange-over-SandsHad the most beautiful tasting Sunday lunch at the Pheasant Inn. Everything about our visit was brilliant,... the food, the drinks and the service received. Will be going back in a couple of days to try something different. Fantastic.

Harry’s Cafe Bar at Yew Tree Barn – Grange-over-SandsLast minute booking and they could not have been more helpful. Happy to help us with directions and taxis Food and atmosphere was excellent
Grants Of Castlegate – PenrithExcellent food very reasonably priced. We chose roast dinners ( also nutroast for our vegetarian guests). The food arrived all together for the 6 of us, beautifully presented, hot and with limitless gravy! Very polite, friendly staff . We will definitely visit again
The Wheatsheaf at Beetham – MilnthorpeReally lovely Sunday roast , great service and very welcoming staff.
Hope and Anchor – Grange-over-SandsPerfect as a walkable local while we were on holiday nearby. Delicious belly pork starters. Sunday roast pretty good- great potatoes! Would have liked a bit more green veg. Friendly service. Good beer.
Queens Head Inn Tirril – PenrithDisappointed. Booked for a Sunday roast. Menu states chicken, beef and pork offered. When we arrived, we were told there was no beef left and chicken wasn’t even an option. Reluctantly stayed (it was after 6pm and we couldn’t get a table anywhere else). One of us ordered the burger, which cost £15 and was literally a burger, some cheese a bun and a few fries. No lettuce, tomatoes, etc. Service was also poor. No one asked us if we wanted any sauces, or checked if our food was okay. It’s a shame - this is our local and we used to visit regularly. I’d like to say this is the first time this has happened. But unfortunately it has gone downhill in recent months.
