Been here couple years ago and the food was incredible - brought the whole family over this weekend and unfortunately the food was very disappointing. The food came out luke warm, tasteless and not a thrilling menu to begin with. We ordered 6 pints on arrival, the food came out and we ordered another 6 pints. These drinks had not arrived by the time we finished our meals, at which point we didn’t want to stay any longer due to disappointing food and a lack of atmosphere and warmth in the pub.

We visit most times we are in the Lake District, and our most recent visit did not disappoint! We tried the 3 courses for £33 deal, and were both blown away by our starter and mains in particular - amazing combinations of flavours - and with a couple of very tasty pints to boot it provided a great reward for having walked over from Stainton. Look forward to seeing what you have on offer in the New Year when we're next back.

This pub was recommended to us by the B&B we were staying at. We booked for dinner and were very impressed. Food and service were outstanding.

We always try and book into the Horse and Farrier at Dacre on our frequent visits to the lakes and this time didn’t disappoint. Fantastic roasts and gorgeous venison burgers with the usual great service and a beautiful setting. See you again soon!

After spending a few nights at Ullswater heights we decided to try your lovely pub for Sunday lunch. We were not disappointed. All 3 of us had the roast beef dinner and it was amazing . We would definitely go back again and certainly recommend it to friends and family .

Grants Of Castlegate – Penrith

We enjoyed an evening meal at Grants of Castlegate on the first night of a two night stay in Penrith. It's in a rather un-prepossessing street in Penrith, but once you go in, you are treated to a wonderfully warm welcome from Front of House, Mike - and then you can enjoy the excellent ambiance in the restaurant, as well as their delicious food, service and generally wonderful dining experience! We were just knocked out! We both enjoyed the fillet steaks and because we don't eat carbs in any shape or form, we were given some extra green vegetables to enjoy. I had the prawn and chorizo starter, and my husband enjoyed the twice baked cheese souffle with creamed leeks, both of which to die for. Obviously no sugary dessert, so we enjoyed a plate each of local cheeses - 4 cheeses I think, 3 of which were from Appleby and absolutely delicious - so much so that I went into the local deli the next day and bought some more to take home with us! A wonderful memorable meal. Many thanks to Stephen, the Chef Patron and front of house Mike!

We had a fabulous meal here last night on the 1st night of our holiday . The food was beautiful and the service was excellent. Small intimate little restaurant which would be great for any special occasion.

Great little pub restaurant far better than those in town. We popped in during the day for soup and it was do good we went back in the evening. Food freshly made and is excellent as is the beer, the vanilla and oatmeal stout was superb.

The H& F is consistently excellent and that takes a lot of effort. We’re local and eat here regularly. We’ve not been disappointed once. Its regular menu is varied and is complemented by an extensive and imaginative specials menu. The staff is extremely attentive and friendly without being intrusive. All set in a traditional pub atmosphere.

I had an excellent meal here. All the food was perfectly cooked. I recommend having the cheese soufflé as a dessert after a sorbet.

We were staying at the Quiet Site and randomly wanted somewhere to eat on Saturday night- 11th October. Found the Horse and Farrier on line and the menu looked impressive. It certainly lived up to expectations. The pork belly and pineapple pudding were exceptional. Will recommend this eatery to my friends and family who are often visiting the north Lakes. Brilliant chef and lovely service. Thank you
