Bradford-born Andrew Bradley learnt his trade at the Michelin-starred Box Tree at Ilkley before a spell as restaurant manager at Clarks Bistro in Bradford in the 1990s. Today he owns and runs two eponymous restaurants in Yorkshire – this one in Huddersfield and more recently he has taken over and rebranded his former workplace, Clarks. Both Bradleys offer a winning combination of clean, contemporary design, accomplished modern British cooking and reasonable prices. Bradleys is open for lunch weekdays and in the evenings Monday-Saturday with an early bird menu available every night. With a Michelin star, four AA rosettes and one of the country's best wine lists, the Burlington Restaurant at the Devonshire Arms is one of the north's top destinations for food lovers. The Bolton Abbey estate is in the heart of Wharfedale, near Skipton, and this area is home to some of Yorkshire's most beautiful countryside. Originally a coaching inn, it has been in the family of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire since 1733 and is now a luxury country house hotel with a range of amenities, including its own health spa. Executive Chef Michael Wignall's a la carte and tasting menus are served in one of the Burlington's three rooms, with an ambience ranging from the classic (antique polished tables, fine china and sparkling silver) to the contemporary (the modern conservatory looking out over the Italian garden). The wine list stretches to 2,000 bins and 170 pages but has plenty of choice by the glass and a helpful sommelier on hand. ...more information

Famous for its sublime views over Wharfedale, the Devonshire Fell at Burnsall, near Skipton, is owned by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. They purchased the property in 1998 and immediately undertook a complete makeover, introducing a striking and contemporary interior design theme to a hotel that was originally built as retreat for gentleman mill owners. There are 10 individually decorated rooms and two suites with the bistro housed in a conservatory with a spectacular vista overlooking the River Wharfe. The Feversham Arms Hotel in Helmsley, on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors, is an old coaching inn that was rebuilt and renamed by the Earl of Feversham in 1855. Under the current ownership since 2003, this classy destination hotel’s facilities include 33 rooms and suites (all air-conditioned and some with open fires and wood-burning stoves), a snug bar, welcoming public lounges, an all-weather outdoor pool, a two-AA-rosetted restaurant and -- from October 2008 – the new Verbena Spa. Head chef Simon Kelly has worked under both Michel Roux and Nico Ladenis and offers a choice of menus – a la carte, set menu and tasting menu – based on the wealth of local produce with game a speciality. Menus change every two to three months and the extensive wine list offers plenty of options including a range of magnums and a wine flight with the tasting menu. Hotel Du Vin was founded in Winchester in 1994 and the boutique hotel chain now extends to 13 properties, each with a unique location and the trademark Hotel Du Vin essentials – namely French-styled bistros with a modern edge, unsurpassed wine cellars and eclectic furnishings. Harrogate’s Hotel Du Vin was created from a row of eight Georgian-styled houses and enjoys a great location overlooking The Stray in the centre of town. Prashad first opened in Bradford in 1986 but it’s only since 2004 that this Indian vegetarian restaurant has been serving sit-down meals. It’s very much a Patel family affair with mother in the kitchen and father and son managing the restaurant. Prashad is a Gujarati word which translates literally as ‘blessed food’ and what’s on offer is a choice of healthy vegetarian chaat dishes, the kind of popular street snacks available across India.
