Points Of View

Everyone’s a critic, so the saying goes and in the foodie world, that’s certainly never been more true. With the now-established world of food blogging, Twitter and the like, no-one need ever let a bad meal go uncriticised or a good one praised. Just log on, select your restaurant of choice and it’s guaranteed someone, somewhere will have a point of view on it.

Times have changed since Egon Ronay, who’s sadly critiqued his last meal, first started. The story goes that when he first arrived in England at Victoria Station in the 1940s, his very first experience of good old British hospitality was on buying a cup of tea and discovering the spoon to stir it with was both communal and tied to the counter to guard against those pesky cutlery thieves. So outraged was he by the quality of post-war food here that he set up his own restaurant, then went on to found the eponymous guide which changed the eating habits of restaurant-goers nationwide, giving diners a heretofore undiscovered voice against the establishment. The Crusading Spirit

You might be entitled to think that a meal out is a fairly non-controversial activity. However, it seems more and more that not a morsel can pass your breathlessly anticipating lips before someone or other is hectoring you about the ethics of your chosen provender. Witness the ‘media storm’ generated by the recent comments of Kate Winslet (and whichever celebrity decides they need a little PETA action) over the ethics of foie gras. Now, we’re not for a moment suggesting that la Winslet et al are not living up to their tediously repetitive claim to be just like us. But really, one day they’re all ‘I live on bangers and mash and Pot Noodle because I’m an ordinary girl-next-door who’s useless in the kitchen’ and the next they appear to be begging forgiveness for a lifetime of seemingly filling their Botox-stuffed faces with over-stuffed goose liver, which, let’s face it, us ‘ordinary folk’ don’t exactly live on. Anyway, you may or may not have noticed the whole thing died a death within minutes, so clearly the restaurant-going Joe Public doesn’t feel that strongly about it either. Read full post
