The Pheasant

The Pheasant is a wonderfully atmospheric old coaching inn, hidden away off the northwest edge of Bassenthwaite Lake. Latest Recommendation

Keez Bistro, Carlisle

My partner and I went to Keez for the first time yesterday evening and we will definitely be going back. The staff were very welcoming and friendly throughout the evening and the surroundings comfortable and smart. Each of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals as the food was nothing short of excellent. Having the option to return to the seating area to finish our wine after the meal was a real treat. I have already been recommending Keez to my colleagues this morning and cannot believe that I hadn't found the place sooner-what a gem of a bistro!

Main Story

The Other Lake District

For some people, the Lake District starts at Bowness Pier and ends in Ambleside. The slightly more adventurous might make it to Hawkshead or Coniston and old hands range as far north as Keswick or down to Newby Bridge at the southern tip of Windermere. But the fact is that beyond the well-frequented tourist hotspots, the Lake District and the unspoilt areas immediately surrounding it have plenty to offer the intrepid traveller – and that includes ...more
