Ask The Chef Russell Plowman
Head chef Russell Plowman joined Gilpin Lodge in January 2009 from the Michelin-starred L'Ortolan Restaurant in Berkshire. Prior to that he was at the Relais & Chateaux three-Michelin-starred Waterside Inn at Bray. The three-AA-rosetted cuisine at Gilpin is modern English with an emphasis on the finest fresh seasonal produce - much from within the National Park - beautifully presented without unnecessary fuss. Russell has teamed up with Sugarvine to answer your cookery questions:
Ask Russell Plowman your question.Over the years I have tried and tried to recreate at home the beef stroganoffs I remember from dining out in my youth. My versions always turn out too creamy and lacking that richness and flavour. Any suggestions? - Roger J

Gilpin Lodge, WindermereThe CriticsWhat The Papers Say
Yes, they might be London-centric and some of them don't even have all that much to say about the food -- but there's no denying that the restaurant critics do make for interesting reading. Latest Recommendation:Tweedies Bar, Grasmere
More information on Tweedies Bar"After reading several good, no great reviews, we decided to try it out. First impression was good, great atmosphere, excellent waitress and starters. The main courses however were disastrous. My calves liver had the texture of having been steamed and was practically liquid in the middle; one mouthful left me heaving. Whilst my husbands beef medallions looked nicely seared, they too had the texture of being steamed!! Maybe the old chef has left but these meals were certainly not Michelin standard."
