Papa Luigis – ChorleyVisited for Easter Sunday lunch with my parents. The starters were lovely portions are really big. The chicken and pinenut scotch egg was amazing and the prawn Marie Rose was so tasty. We all had the roast dinners 2 had pork, one beef and one lamb. Husband had the lamb and said it was the best roast he has ever eaten (not sure whether to be offended when I’ve been cooking him roast dinners for the last 28 years!!!).
Lunesdale Arms – Kirkby LonsdaleThe place is well situated with lovely panoramic views, despite the care-home interiors the place has a decent, family, atmosphere. The bar menu is comprehensive and they have a range of food options that will cater well to a broad set of dietary needs. Prices are relatively low and portions are relatively large, if that is all you are concerned about this may be a good option for you. Staff at the restaurant are friendly but service is very unpolished. A review of hospitality practice would be beneficial. We were not welcomed and had to seek out the assistance of a team member directly. Staff seem inexperienced and unable to cope with busy service. They were perhaps a little overly casual for a sit down restaurant and would scurry away the second they were done with the order. We ordered the small Sunday roast. The food itself was presented in a style reminiscent of the heyday of mid-2000s gastropubs. Food was stacked in an abstract tower with a pool of gravy and a smattering of microgreens. A precariously mounted, gravy filled, Yorkshire pudding crowns the dish making for a hazardous experience for those who might choose to wear white. At the tower’s base was a dollop of mash so salty I was unable to taste much of the rest of the meal. The meat was dry and flavourless. For pudding I had the chocolate brownie, the brownie was perfectly fine (I’m not sure it’s possible for a brownie not to be). The ice cream was grainy with ice crystals visible. In the end we left having only been able to eat about half of the roast and with a distinct sense that this wasn’t my sort of restaurant. I would be interested to try the shepherds rest again on a quieter day so see if the issues I experienced were a result of the busy service. I would recommend this restaurant to families looking for a cheap meal with nice views.
The Shepherds Rest Inn – TodmordenSunday lunch was excellent.

Lunesdale Arms – Kirkby LonsdaleGreat place, great staff and delicious food!
The Whitchaff Inn – RawtenstallMy booking was for Easter Sunday which had a set Easter menu of 2 or 3 courses only. I had seen the menu on their fb but didn’t realise I couldn’t order a main only - they told me when I didn’t order a starter. Having eaten a roast dinner here previously, I knew I wouldn’t manage 2/3 courses so the waitress gave us the option to take out desserts home which was appreciated. We both chose the herb crusted lamb leg with no extras and was surprised when we weren’t asked how we wanted the meat ie rare, medium rare, well done etc. I was quite disappointed with the meat as they were very thin slices of lamb that had thick lines of fat. It was well done when my preference is rare and I thought I’d get “chunks” rather than slices that included the herb crust but that was nowhere to be seen. It tasted okay but I left most due to the fat/taste not to my liking. The rest of the meal was lovely, there were whimsical Easter sticks added which was cute. The Yorkshire pudding is the showstopper - tall, crunchy and fluffy. The vegetables were cooked nicely and roasties were okay but a little soggy as placed inside the mash which I thought a little odd. The staff were/have always been lovely; very friendly, welcoming and professional. The decorations for Easter were subtle but classy and looked really nice. We decided to take our dessert home as we were both full - we picked the Easter brownie with mini eggs which were nice. Overall, I think for the price we paid for 2 courses it was a little underwhelming because of the lamb meat issue but it wouldn’t stop us returning as we still enjoyed our meal. It’s a lovely country pub/restaurant and the staff are great.
